a blog about stuff. random stuff. rad stuff. stuff i like. art stuff. music stuff. stuff i'm involved in. good stuff.

i just scored the new tobacco album, maniac meat last night. sooooo excited. i friggen LOVE his first album and all of the work by his main gig, black moth super rainbow which any regular readers of this blog already know. haha. the album comes out may 25th, and tobacco just finished up some US tour dates a few days ago...which unfortunately i didn't know about until too late to go see any of the shows (or the one show in brooklyn). hopefully he'll be back around soon though. this new album picks up right where fucked up friends left off and has his signature heavily vocoded vocals and spacey analog synth sounds. beck makes a guest appearance on 2 tracks, "grape aerosmith," and "fresh hex" which was a nice collaboration between these 2 arists. some of my favorite tracks include the instrumentals "creepy phone calls" and "tv all greasy," the bouncy and popped up "mexican ice cream," and "new juices from the hot tub freaks" (prob going to add this one to my DJ sets), super spacey, "lick the witch," and the kinda creepy "heavy makeup" this album has a lot to offer and goes in a lot of great directions, its def a keeper in my book! i heart tobacco 4E! haha
follow the first link to read an interview with tom fec aka tobacco...
-my brother bought me a pack of garbage pail kids yesterday. hell yeah.
-i just broke 15,000 songs on my ipod. yet another HELL YEAH! (the 2nd shuffalump post soon...maybe tomorrow?)
-i'm not a big reality show person but fucking jerseylicious has seriously changed my life forever...and not necessarily saying for the better, but my mind was majorly fucking ALTERED watching that shit. hahahahaha. i can't believe there are people on this earth live/act that way....or have hair THAT BIG...or who start bawling when they have to get their talon-like nails cut...or who use THAT MUCH bronzer. like...really. hahahahahaha. check it out on style network....i caught it one day flipping through the channels while bored and was instantly sucked in so beware of that and its mind-altering powers! hahahahahahaha
-finding out very soon if i'm moving or not...keep your fingers crossed!
-broken bells is the new collaboration between james mercer of the shins and dangermouse. ive heard one track so far and i'm trying to grab more. check them out http://www.brokenbells.com/
-steve made lime/raspberry jello tonight and like 2 fat kids we housed that shit in less than 5 minutes. haha. i love pudding and jello, i could eat either or both every day. when i was little i would get so excited when my mom would make either as a treat for us.
-the gas gauge in my car is awesome. it either says empty or full. it never says anything else. great.
-its looking very likely that i'll be going to see grizzly bear in brooklyn on 6/20...i was invited to anyway. haha. and i'm EXCITED as hell about it! (thanks to barrie for hooking that shit up!)
-my oldest, dearest, bestest friend, shaina cokes will be in town for the next 3 days. can i get a FUCK YEAH on that!!?!?!?
-lots of art and DJ events coming up in the month of may. i will keep all ya'll suckaz posted yo.

i stumbled on this when i was looking for headlines on ronald reagan to get inspiration for the anti-reagan art i'm making for my show this friday. HAHAHAHAHAHA. hell yeah! and you know what i'll use this as the perfect place to insert the new that archie comics now have their very own gay character for the first time ever, kevin keller. follow this link to read up about it on perezhilton.com (and thanks to my friend luca for posting this link originally on her facebook!). my ex used to keep copies of archie in the bathroom. haha. i never asked why or saw her read one, but they were always there. haha.
-i just got some new dress clothes which i'm excited about. for the first time ever i have a suit jacket...that fits! now i just need my mother dearest to hem the pants for me. haha
-going to look at a new apartment tomorrow. i pray it works out! its cheaper and bigger so hell yeah!
-i find it to be completely awesome when my one cat who loves to snuggle comes to lay with me immediately after leaving the litter box and has poop on her butt. totally AMAZING!
-cheesecake pudding rules. end of discussion.
-http://khaelamaricich.com/wordpress/ khaela of the blow who has new music coming later in the year.
-steve's dad is having a huge multi day garage sale so we stopped by the other day and scored 6 star wars glasses from the 70s and 80s from the original movies (for free of course). they're in great shape and we could probably sell them on ebay but i'd rather be an uber dork and just use them. haha.
-my ipod is acting up. great.
-i watched a show about zombie alligators today. no really. i did.
-i just got a DJ gig for 5/16 at parlay studios in jersey city for the libery humane society's 2nd annual "Single Mingle and Bark" event. also featuring lollibomb beauty and other local artists/crafters as well as a wine tasting. this is going to be a rad event and i will post more info as i have it. def excited to be involved and i owe another thank you to luca for hooking me up! this is going to be the biggest space i've ever DJ'd so i'm a little nervous, but i'm gonna just go in and rock it! hell yeah! i also need to get new headphones since i was ever so smooth and broke my other ones at the last gig i had. haha.
HOLY FUCK has a new record coming out next month, Latin. i scored a copy of it today and its damn good shit! they are also including a bonus ep featuring 4 non-album tracks with all pre-orders of the record so i will have to score those when they are available online. their music is regularly a part of my DJ set lists, and after giving this a first listen, i'm already planning adding one of the tracks, "red lights" into my set list next time i have a gig. from when i first heard them until now, their musicianship and the level of quality of the songs has definately gotten so much better which is why i love them. they def lay down some really awesome and energetic grooves on this effort (as they did on their last record) as opposed to the regurgitated canned casio sounds that were their earliest tracks. i did enjoy those early tracks and thought the concept was a good idea but they admittedly didn't have much room to move there. this release features more of the canned bits and bleeps which will always be a part of their signature sound, but its how they shape them along with the live bass and drums that gets me everytime. i had a chance to see them live in 2007 and they put on a damn good show. i would definately like to see them again though they don't have very many US tour dates upcoming and none of them work with my schedule which sucks, but they tour a lot so maybe later in the year. below is a pic i took(again watermarked with my "government" name and old email) when i saw them play philadelphia in 2007.
THIS FRIDAY NIGHT!!!!!
come check out the Loop Lounge Punk Art show! featuring artwork by yours truly, tim, kristy eruhow, jesse caldwell, paul klein, and more and benefitting Mission Remission, you don't want to miss this. i will be in the DJ booth spinning classic punk tracks, keeping it legit for the night, and you don't want t...o miss a special guest appearance by shaina cokes, so fucking BE THERE!!!!!!!!!!
message me for more info/directions suckaz!

-crystal castles have a new S/T album coming out. i'm unclear of the release date since it was apparently moved due to the album being leaked. i DL'd it today. not bad but as with any super energetic electro music, i have to be in the right mood for it (which i kinda wasn't today but i gave it a go anyway. i need to listen to it again to really absorb it). check their website for more info regarding the particulars for the new release http://crystalcastles.com/

hoos sticker at montclair state university. someone sent this to me last night...i haven't been to msu in years so i'm thinking someone i passed the stickers along to slapped this up which is definately awesome! if you see a hoosatronic sticker somewhere, take a pic, send it to me, tell me where you saw it, and i will post it on the blog. (also if you see any that say "baby dicks rule" which i made for friends, i'm interested to see where they turn up too. haha). thank you to alex r. for sending this in to me!
-i'm listening to the new medications record, "completely removed" right now for the first time and i'm not so sure i'm as into it as their earlier stuff which is disappointing. i'm only 2 songs in but both are kind of mediocre and have delved a little too dangerously close to...dare i say it...an almost alt-country feel at a few points. not impressed so far...hopefully it'll get better though.
-sinus headache occuring right now. no no no.
-sarah silverman's new book, "the bedwetter: stories of courage, redemption, and pee" is now officially in my possession. i started it last night and the little i have read so far is of course highly raunchy and inappropriate. yes! it also has a ton of pictures in it which is cool (and includes a penis shot of one of the writers from the sarah silverman program. hell fucking yeah!) follow this link to read an interview with her from vanity fair http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2010/04/qa-sarah-silverman-penis-and-vagina-should-be-equal-comedically-but-theyre-not.html
-okay so a few more songs into the medications record...i heard one i like, "we could be others" hmmm...i just want it to be more complicated and more rocking like their older stuff....maybe it'll grow on me. we'll see
-i have the new photoshop thanks to my brother and i'm excited about it...i just need to install it and play with it now. i have a bunch of pics to catch up on so maybe i should get on that. haha.
hoosatron out! (it's a short one today...my head hurts)

nervous gender- monsters (i get uncomfortable listening to NG…which of course is perfect! not my fave song by them, but definitely a keeper. i need to dig up my homemade NG t-shirt)
fiest- leisure suite (i DL’d this on the recommendation of a friend. not my favorite thing in the world, but definitely cute and well played)
sneaker pimps- wasted early sunday morning (i remember hearing “6 underground” for the first time at around age 15…and immediately having a crush on-original- SP vocalist kelli dayton. it wasn’t until 1999 that i heard the entire album through a friend. we listened to it constantly and were obsessed with finding out more…and since neither of us had reliable internet back then, we dug and dug in record stores til we found new material by them, and much to our chagrin, they had a new singer and it just wasn’t the same. we lost our interest soon after that discovery, but i still think of my friend, eric, every time i hear them…he was killed while serving in iraq in 2007. i never forgot him, or this record- its stuck with me all these years…first on a shitty tape-recorded copy, next on a super lucky score of an autographed promo copy of the cd, and then eventually i DL’d it. that’s some staying power)
unrest- i do believe you are blushing (live) (a simple, fun, and classic track by this super cute group)
madonna-like a prayer (life IS a mystery. oh madonna! i love her early stuff. you know, before she got all fucking like sexed-trashed up...and before she called herself esther...and also before she got all of a sudden classy and british. yeah!)
brian eno and harold budd- above chiangmai (from the 2nd installation in “the ambient” series, the plateaux of mirror. this is quiet and somewhat chilling piano music. while it is very good, i have to be in the right mood for this and it is best listened to with headphones so you don’t miss any of the texture. i'm trying to track down more history/music by brian eno so i can better understand him)
atom and his package-upside down from here (i LOVED this dude when i was a teenager. i also loved-and still love- his ability to take everyday seemingly random interactions and turn them into silly and absurd songs. this song comes from a conversation with someone in which he was given directions and told “east is always right” which any intelligent person knows is not in fact true)
to my boy- i am xray (super bouncy and fun electro pop. its not something i listen to everyday, but def get excited about when it comes up on shuffle when i'm driving)
lunachicks- jerk of all trades (hell yeah! i another band that i fucking LOVED when i was younger and i still love. the first time i heard them i was about 16 and it was love at first listen. i'd never heard girls rock so hard before this…well, except for L7…but somehow the lunachicks were way better than L7 to me. probably because they had a snarkier and more obnoxious approach to things and were less...idk..."biker" chicks than L7 seemed to be. in any case, hearing the lunachicks changed me forever. i got a chance to see and meet them in 1999 at the warped tour and it was definitely totally fucking amazing! they shredded on stage and they were all super nice to the uber dorky 18year old mini hoos. haha. i wish 2 things, and those 2 things being that i could have seen them play more and that they were still making music)
black moth super rainbow- appleworms (its always special when BMSR comes up on shuffle and this song is somewhat of a "rarity" in that it features acoustic guitar, minimal keys, and most unusual, tobacco sings sans vocoder which almost never happens. i consider this a little gem in their massive catalog of songs and it comes via the “sing to us” ep which is comprised of all super lo-fi, mostly unproduced, non album tracks)
cattle decapitation- dead meal (hahahahahaha. i know you’re not supposed to laugh hysterically at death metal, but i just can’t help myself! i mean…they fucking have a song call “pedeadstrians” come on! hahahaha. anyway, this song kicks SERIOUS ass! i wanna go break some faces and sacrifice a goat now. hahahahahaha)
hot snakes- bye nancy boy (i like HS…but they are admittedly unremarkable. their songs are catchy enough but they don’t stray far from a pretty standard formula. still, this is some damn good drivin’ music, that’s for sure)
men’s recovery project- entire house fly through head (i don’t understand MRP…and i don’t think i'll ever understand MRP…but i'm okay with that. this is a short and weird electro ditty from them sandwiched in between some of their more rocking tracks. interesting that i just mentioned them in a post)
britney spears-circus (how fitting that she would come on right after some weird obscuro shit. haha. i'm not afraid to admit i've got fucking britney on my ipod! hahaha. it’s a fun and catchy song, what can i say?)

-i figured out how to have clickable links on this shit so now you can click on something on this rather than copy and pasting shit. woohoo! i've moved into the 2000s finally!
-i ran into my aunt at dirt-mart tonight (aka the trashy "supermarket" by my house). i haven't seen her in years. i think she thought my roomie was my BF. hahahaha. yeah.
-i waste entirely too much time writing lists and then not doing them. i kinda need to work on that one i think.
-caribou has a new record out this week, "swim" i just DL'd it but have yet to listen. i will update. http://www.caribou.fm/
-men's recovery project is so fucking weird. i'm currently listening to their song "the couch" which is about a living couch which then dies and the lady who owns the couch has to call the furniture store to have it taken away. i think i'm in love. (i can't get a link to work for this however...google them and you'll get info)
-boards of canada is re-releasing "hi scores" tomorrow which originally came out in 1996 and has since become pretty hard to find. i actually scored it not too long ago and its pretty fucking good. but then again, everything BOC does is pretty fucking good if you ask me.
-stay tuned for the hoosatron shuffle post. my ipod on shuffle and my thoughts on the first 15 songs that come up (i'm thinking next post)
-sarah silverman's book comes out tomorrow! ooooh! stopping by the bookstore after work to get it. yay!
the medications also have a new record out this week, "completely removed" i'm excited because its been a while since they've done anything new and those guys can friggen PLAY. i saw them twice in 06 and i've included a few pics from then (with my "government" name watermarked on them haha) i'm in process of obtaining this record now and can't wait to hear it cuz i love intricate rock shit like this. they have gotten a new drummer, mark cisneros, since the last record, but from what i know, he didn't really play on the album. the drumming was covered by guitarist/singer devin ocampo and bassist chad molter (the drummer pictured below is andrew becker who played on their first 2 records). i'm really anticipating this record and i can't wait til its done DLing so i can hear it finally! i will post an update once i listen.

i've been busy this week...and feeling lazy about blogging...and a little mixed up...but its all good.
(photo- newark avenue, jersey city. also freesexinthemouth.com which you can see on the sticker in this shot is not a porn site, its a blog by franciseasy. check it out)
-peter steele of type o negative died a few days ago. wtf!?! that was totally unxpected. i love type o, i just wish i could have seen them live. my old, old band that i was in like 10 years ago fucked around during the one time we played a "show" for people and butchered some type o songs in between our original songs. haha. pete steele would have kicked our asses we were so bad, but it would have been an honor to get a beat down from him! hahaha. i have a tape of it somewhere but god only knows where.
-so it was my birthday on friday and it was a pretty good bday as far as bdays go! i had to work, but it was all good. my team got me a card and like 30 people signed it! also, a few people gave me gifts, including a cake, donuts, and an itunes giftcard. it was really nice of them to get a card and gifts for their little boy boss. hahaha. then saturday night i had my party and got to see a few of my philly peeps which was totally rad and i was so happy that they came up. a lot of people passed through to say happy bday too throughout the afternoon/night which was nice. i had a great time hanging out with some of my favorite people, and even though i wasn't expecting it and just was happy to see my friends, a few people brought some really nice gifts. my friends matt and jaden even gave me some of their original art which was super friggen awesome! i'm so lucky to have so many talented artists as friends cuz when they give me their art as gifts, its the best thing ever cuz i feel like i'm getting a little piece of them at the same time. it was def a good bday...even despite having to work...and now the countdown to the big THREE-OH has officially started...only 363 days left. haha.
-my brother scored me a copy of the new photoshop CS5. i'm going to install it on my PC and just use that from now on instead of torturing my eyes with my mac, or spending mad cash to get a new mac. (i looked into prices the other day...a grand minimum and thats without the software i'd need. as much as i'd love it, i can't justify spending that kind of money for a new computer that would be a secondary computer anyway when i have a PC that works perfectly fine)
-my bday gift to myself was a custom made HOOS hat. its pretty awesome even if the girl did mess up the lettering a little on the back. oh well. its a prototype and i'm thinking of getting another one made in a different color. i'm not sure if i'm going to make more, but i am thinking about making t-shirts to sell. we shall see. also, keep an eye out for the aforementioned HOOS stickers, as well as the just made HOOS-REDUX stickers and BABY DICKS RULE stickers (which don't have HOOS on them, but i made em!)
-http://illbot.net/ FRBR for robots, by robots
-i went to the laundromat today and was reminded how much i hate it when upon arriving i was greeted by 2 running and screaming children. the husky voiced old lady who owns the place was sitting outside when we were leaving and one of the kids did something bad and she chased him and went to kick him. it was fucking AWESOME!
current listening and recently DL'd
-rocketship (super cute pop)
-sourpatch (more super cute pop. its good and something i probably would have been really really into 8-10 years ago)
-russian circles (instrumental rock with some metal twinges, but not in the obnoxious rocker dude kind of way)
-red sparowes (just found out about this band last night from someone at my bday party. more instrumental rock, which is pretty good and with an interesting use of pedal steel guitar)
don't forget! message me for more info/directions

(hoos in paterson, nj)
i've been hard at work in the hoos sticker making factory cuz i heart frying my brain cells to make new shit! i'm also going to design the new vinyl ones, and get them printed somewhat soon, but i wanted to play with these for now. i'm also doing some hand drawn variations and perhaps incorporating a sparkly unicorn into some of them......haha. time will tell on that one. but i've started hitting places and have hit 2 cities with the brand new ones so far (there are the older versions floating around in random places as well) and will def be going for more so keep an eye out for 'em! hit me up if you see one in your town! fucking take a pic and send it to me!
-so...apparently lady gaga is an illuminati puppet and trying to control the world through her music and videos which are loaded with occult symbolism...duh! and i say, thats fucking awesome! hahahahaha. http://vigilantcitizen.com/?p=2737 (that link will take you directly to a story on the occult symbols in "bad romance" but theres so much more fantasticness to be had on that site-about gaga and many others- i can barely handle it! hahahaha)
-fishwithbraids.blogspot.com fish with braids gallery, jersey city
-HOOS FAIL!!! i ran out of gas on the way to work this morning....yeah. FAIL!!!!! i thought i had enough to make it and then i'd get gas on the way home...wrong. haha. my roomie came and rescued me and gave me his car while he waited for AAA to get there with gas. i only ended up being 10 minutes late cuz there ain't exactly a lot of traffic to get in the way of a quick car switch when its 3:30 in the morning. haha. i suck!
-so sarah silverman's book doesn't come out til next week...i so thought it was out now and went to get it today after work. grr! oh well, i will nab it next tuesday, right away!!!!
-kaki king has a new record out junior. i DL'd it but i still have to give it a listen. i also need to DL the new mgmt album, congratulations.
-so i texted my friend barrie this morning...he works at 101.9 RXP...and said "tell pinfield to play new order!" and then magically "blue monday" was the next freaking song on! hell yeah! it made my freaking day!!!!! you rule dude!
-braid has a bunch of vinyl re-issues coming out this week. i was never a huge fan, but i have an album and its not bad. neutral milk hotel also has a re-issue of on avery island coming out. AND there are also some nirvana albums being re-issued on vinyl this week too. it is clearly the week of vinyl re-issues!
-my eyes must be shot cuz i can't fucking see the screen on my mac laptop anymore. i don't know what the hell it is...is it me? is it the screen? i'll have to figure it out cuz i only have photoshop on that computer. it was giving me a major headache trying to work yesterday and i had to stop much to my chagrin. i tried fiddling with the settings and that didn't help much, i just hope i don't have to replace it. ugh.
-http://www.tunefind.com/ if you want to find a song from a TV show or commercial, thats the place to do it.
i mentioned yesterday that i thrifted a windsor camera last week. i did indeed. it is a knock off of the legendary toy camera, the diana, pictured above. the windsor looks identical to this except it says windsor instead of diana. i managed to get lucky and find a more unusual model that takes 620 film in stead of 120 (both films are the same size, they just wind differently). the diana camera and its legions of knockoffs were made in the 60s and 70s by the great wall plastics company and amassed quite a cult following among photographers. they used to be pretty hard to come by and could get rather pricey on ebay, but not as much these days since less people are interested in them and because lomography is now making reproductions. the repros are cool and offer a lot of nifty attachments and alternate models (i'm tempted to get the diana "mini" which shoots 35mm film) that were never available before, but somehow are just not the same. i guess like with anything else that you used to have to really have a blood lust for to find that suddenly becomes easily accessable, it losses its magic and flare. when i was in college and was shooting film all the time i was OBSESSED with toy and old format cameras and methodically hunted them down and researched them (anytime another student would acquire something old and ask professor about it, they were directed to come see me for notes on its history, how to use it, and where to get film for it). my interest has waned a bit in the ensuing years, but i still maintain part of my collection at my house (the rest is in boxes in my parents basement) though i rarely shoot with them anymore. my find of the windsor last week brought a small stab of excitement, not as great as it would have been 7-8 years ago, but it brought me back a little bit! i'd like to find a way to incorporate some of those old cameras back into my art...be it by shooting with them directly (i want to see if i can do some digital rigging, but i'm not that tech savvy sadly), doing thru-the-viewfinder work with them, or physically using them in collage/mixed media pieces. the ones that shoot 35mm or are easy to mod using 35mm are most likely the ones that i will use to shoot directly with since i just don't want to deal with medium format film anymore. so sad of me to say that but its true! haha. at the very least, i should set up a little table top studio and take some pics of my collection to post. hmm...we shall see.
what i love about the above photo is that it appears to have been taken with a diana, but in actuality, it probably wasn't give the lighting and framing of the shot, but hey, i could be wrong.

i saw bonobo on thursday night and it was AMAAAAZING. bonobo is the handy-work of british DJ/producer, simon green though for touring he puts together a live band to play with. the show was at a small venue called the note in west chester, pa (about 35min west of philadelphia) which had such a great vibe and was a really intimate setting to see a show (it reminded me of the now defunct NorthSix in brooklyn which was a place i frequently went to see bands play). the musicians on the tour (their names were announced, but hell if i could really hear them or remember them) were all well versed and super talented, and i nearly melted when the drummer and woodwind player rocked out together near the end of the set for extended solos/duets. also on the tour was vocalist andreya triana who provided the vocals on all of the non-instrumental tracks for the album "black sands" which they played all of; she also sang the vocals for the "days to come" tracks that they played live (on the album, they were provided by a vocalist named bajka). she has a great style and i'm interested in hearing her debut solo record which is coming out this summer on ninja tune. mr. green himself is somewhat un-assuming and at first we weren't even sure which member of the band he was. we finally realized that he was the fellow towards the back playing bass (i had read that he primarily played the bass parts for the live shows). i didn't get as many pictures as i had wanted, but i got a few i liked. i just included the above shot, as it was my favorite, but maybe later i'll post a few of the others. they played pretty much everything i could have wanted with a mix of new material and older songs as well. this made me miss playing live (something i've been super nostalgic about lately. its been almost 4years since i've been in a band) and made me want to go out and see more bands live (soemthing that i used to do constantly). it was def an incredible show, and awesome night out with friends i don't get to see often enough. if you get a chance to see bonobo live, don't be a fool, doooo it!
-sarah silverman has a new book out called The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee. i must obtain this. immediately! after work tomorrow, i'm hitting up the bookstore, shit!
-http://iamneurotic.com/. pretty funny..especially when i read about some of the things others do that i do too!
-some people are just great at cursing. such as the fine gentleman who was eating breakfast at the same establishment in philly that i was the other morning. about halfway through dining, i decided to keep track of how many times this charming man said FUCK...he left about 6 minutes later but in that time, i counted 21 times and that was just what i could hear since it was a little noisy. it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside when i think that if he knew what i was doing he probably would have said to me "well what the fuck are you doing that for? that's fucking stupid" since most of his cursing pertained to how stupid and idiotic other people were and how awesome he was. what a guy!
-my birthday is on friday. i'm getting old. only 1 more until the big 30 next year!
-my friends and i had a fire again last night and it was rad...except that a tiny ember flew off and burned a hole in my pants. not a big deal...except its by my crotch. damnit! i'll prob just be a dirtbag and keep wearing them anyway but idk. haha.
-rocking "get ready" by new order a lot the past few days. (the killers got their name from the video for "crystal" what great name for such a crappy band! boo!)
-this past week was the week of thrifting...i had a thrifting play-date with erica on tuesday and we made some good scores at red white and blue in paterson and at the salvy by me (i'm jealous of her find of a "nosferatu" dvd!). my fav find was an old broken watch which has been hoosified (details to come soon!). i also got a little thrifting action in while in philly and hit up the goodwill on passyunk (i got a great jesus pic there once so i had to make a return trip). i scored a pretty rad and warm zip-up, a windsor plastic camera (a diana camera knock-off. i will post more details on this soon), and a 12" record by a British 80s girl rap duo named the wee papa girls. not a bad friggen week! erica and i are planning a bigger thrifting day and i'm in charge of researching locations for us to hit up. mission:thrift! i'm on it!
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wee_Papa_Girl_Rappers just in case you were wondering! haha
my next show. i'm currently in process of making some all new pieces for this show, as well as contemplating showing some of my old band photos. i'm excited about it since i'm making new stuff and its representing a time that i did live through but have no memory since i was a little kid. i was later influenced by a lot of the stuff that was happening in the 80s punk scene, so it definately has relevance to me. its also looking likely that i will be DJing this show and if so i'll be spinning classic punk tunes which is gonna be awesome! i'll post more details as i get 'em. its gonna be fun and its for a good cause, so come check this shit out!
Sunday, April 4, 2010
its looks really realistic and is totally rad; the uber-geek in me was immediately intrigued, but alas, this is not real. its actually a mod that was put together with some old school atari components and newer pieces (including a gamecube power supply) by a fellow named ben heck. this is the kind of shit i admire and totally wish i could pull off but i'm unfortunately ignorant when it comes to much of advanced computing/electronics. i randomly found this yesterday while searching for something i can't remember right now. haha. anyway, you can read up to get a very detailed "making of," a ton of pics, and see some videos at mr. heck's page here...
-its so quiet at home now that the sceavy-faces are out...such an odd sound. haha
-i was feeling the urge to listen to spacehog just before and made an emergency DL. ain't the interwebs great?

-speaking of shows, i'm going to see bonobo on thursday night. suuuuper excited!
-i watched were the world mine today. maybe i need a love potion to turn the world gay. haha. among others, the cast features robin williams daughter, zelda williams(who apparently was really named after the video game and who is also a hottie! haha), wendy robie (of twin peaks fame, she tends to play really loopy and fucked up characters), and tanner cohen (lead singer of the guts... www.myspace.com/ilovetheguts)
-steve went to his dad's house today and brought me home presents...polaroid film the expired in 1996 (hell yes!), some old tech mags/manuals, and a kid's book from 1985 called "real robots" aww shit son! it was christmas, not easter, in the hoos household!

steve, eric, liz, and i had a kick as fire last night! hell yeah! i love when it gets warm out and things like this occur. my ankle/knee were SERIOUSLY hurting after work yesterday and i was in a super crabby mood, but it was good to get out of the house and this (and a few s'mores!) definately lifted my spirits.
-every time i log onto yahoo today there is a news story that pops up about a 17 year old boy who fell to his death off of a hotel balcony on spring break in florida. its so sad. i hate shit like that. and my question is, where the hell were the parents? how was something like this allowed to happen? (no details regarding the exact circumstance were released-specifically if alcohol was a factor or how much supervision he was under but...i suspect yes to alcohol and that not much supervision was happening...otherwise this boy would very likely still be alive)
-but in good news!!!! my baby cousin, eleanor, was born yesterday! she's soooo pretty and looks just like her daddy, my cousin eric. i can't wait to meet her!

(it was someone's bday yest and i made fucking SURE to email her...we'll see if she responds. haha)
quasi has a new record out, american gong, which is their 8th album. they are also now a trio after years of performing as a duo. i've always been a fan of drummer janet weiss (who also beat the skins for years in sleater-kinney who i had the pleasure of seeing several times so i could see ms. weiss in action up close. i also met her briefly in 2005) and respect the wealth of talent she has. i need to give this album a deeper listen, but on first trial, it sounds pretty good. its definately more fuzzed and heavier with more guitar presence than any of their previous offerings and is an overall mostly energetic bunch of songs. "little white horse" is prob my fav song so far, and i enjoyed "bye bye blackbird" which is a pretty straight up rocker, but again, as i said before, i need to give this a deeper listen to really explore it in depth (and with headphones, always gotta do that! haha). they just finished a west coast tour and will be on tour on the east coast throughout april. i saw them some years back...prob 2002 or 2003...i need to dig up the photos from that...but i wouldn't mind seeing them again, especially as a trio and with their new more "rock band" kind of sound. NPR just did a profile on them. check it out and DL this album.

this is a scan from my sketchbook from summer of 2008. what a crazy time where fate really did unfold in some pretty weird ways. so many intense emotions were streaming through my blood at every waking moment then (and i was barely sleeping during that time so it was magnified) and i look back and wonder how i made it through in one piece. sigh. i was looking through that book trying to find a spanish translation for something and came across some heavy things. again...sigh. anyway, that all ties into the music i want to talk about now....i mentioned tristeza in my post yesterday and i discovered them in the summer of 08 during that crazy time. i read about them on a blog and i was immediately drawn to the description of their mastery of dreamy, instrumental rock and DL'd them right away. it was true...they were really good and indeed can be very dreamy at times with their use of echo effects, keys, and subtle electronic instrumentation, and are usually pretty down-tempo all of which are SOOOO exactly what i want in an instrumental band (who plays instruments. electro instrumental is different). and in a way they are more accessable to me than explosions in the sky, another titan of instru-rock. they're also way less EPIC in their song structures which is also nice because sometimes less is more, and tristeza tends to pack more of an emotional punch into their shorter songs. not that i don't love EITS, but they don't really delve far from the "really long epic song, quiet-loud-quiet-loud-queit-REALLY LOUD-quiet-feedback fadeout" model which is somewhat of a weakness for them in my opinion. anyway, back to tristeza...what i liked a lot about them too, was the use of spanish for many their song/album titles (i took their song title "abrazo distante"-distant embrace- as the name of my other blog) and their name is spanish for "sadness" which i had tattooed on my wrist soon after discovering the english translation. because of the location-it being any further down would have put it on the palm of my hand-it was one of the most painful tattoos i've ever gotten, which was definately fitting. sooo anyway...i also mentioned last post that they have a new album, "fate unfolds" which was released in december of 09. i obtained it today and its really good. a little less on the dreamy side, bouncier and more upbeat, which was a nice change for them. the songs are all also under 5minutes which added to the more upbeat feel, and very few of the songs had any spanish titles. the same great musician-ship was there though and thats what matters. standout tracks are the opener, "castellon," "manitas," and "the punch" DL this if you know whats good for you!
there is no info on their website about any touring plans they currently have, but they made mention of releasing a new album halfway through 2010 on their myspace. i'll def keep my ears open for that, cuz we're getting closer to the midway mark of the year, and hopefully if they do decide to tour out this way, i can catch them.
-steve and i ate dinner on the balcony tonight. it was nice. i'm happy its getting warmer out cuz i hate the winter.
-i watched a few episodes of rupaul's drag race last night. i'm not much of a reality tv fan, but it was funny. apparently henry rollins was a guest judge on one episode but not the ones i saw.
-mint chocolate chip ice cream sandwiches are a glorious creation.
-i tried taking a short walk today thinking it would help me, but it just ended up irritating my ankle and knee. great. i'm going to use my trusty heating pad soon for some relief.

the person in the above pic from my book did not keep her promises. not suprising really, but it was worth hoping for at the time. also, "eu sinto sua falta" is portuguese which translates literally to "i feel your absence," or simply...i miss you. i wish i could tell her that now, but she stopped listening a long time ago.
