lighter than air

i don't know where i took this though according to the metadata i apparently took it in january 24th 2010 at 3:19am. hmmmmm. yeah not jogging my memory on exactly what i was doing. despite it being out of focus, i still enjoy it, probably cuz i'm a fat kid and a huge slut for cupcakes. that's gotta be it. hahaha

+++++

sometimes, a good day is just laying low and hanging with your kitties and having a netflix marathon. hahaha. oh and ordering a yummy chef salad from my fav awesome pizza parlor, aj's pizza in butler nj. yes, i am going to take a few seconds to blog about food which i never do and usually scoff at, tho i will not post picture of said salad once it has arrived at my house. hahaha. but yeah, this place has really good food and deliver like super fast, even on really busy nights. so yeah. there is my food section of this blog and a plug for a local business. yep. so i got a lot of randomness below, check it!

randomy...

-----so kim deal left the pixies. i really wasn't surprised to hear that at all, rather more surprised that she did it now and seemingly so randomly. and also now cuz her and frank black/black francis have hated each other for years, why didn't she leave back in the early 90s? not that i wanted her to leave but...i feel like her full talents were never given a chance to shine in the pixies and i was always really glad she chose to do the breeders and her lesser known 1995 project the amps who released one record, pacer. i mean, who really knows what went on recently and what prompted her to go now. maybe it was the re-union of the "classic" lineup of the breeders and their tour to support the anniversary of last splash? or maybe her and BF had some tensions recently and just finally couldn't take each other anymore. don't get me wrong, i do like the pixies, but will always be a fan of the breeders first and foremost. i won't go into detail, but i'm not much a fan of mr. black overall. he kind of rubs me the wrong way. but yeah, i mean i don't know the guy personally or anything so whatevs. i do wish i could have seen the pixies play with her but i guess that won't be happening now. i def want to see the breeders again the first chance i can cuz they were friggen amazing when i saw them last month. i'm hoping that this whole split means there is going to be more new breeders material coming down the pike, cuz that is one thing i've never liked about them, the slow pace at which albums come out. you'd figure in twenty plus years they would have produced more than what they have...but yeah we shall see what happens.
-----man, some people on fb, i wish i could like slap them in the face in real life. like there is this one chick i'm friends with who posts several times a day and 99% of the time her shit is just her complaining how bad her life is or how some guy broke up with her or how she has no friends to hang out with and blah, blah, blah. there never seems to be anything positive...guess maybe that is why guys keep dumping her? haha. but i mean, i get it, we all get bitchy from time to time and post about stuff that is bothering us [tho i tend to reserve that for physical ailments like last week with my wisdom tooth and try to avoid emotional status updates] but does it have to be several times a day, every day? i wanna like inbox this chick and tell her to STFU but...i guess i'll just be nice and block her instead. hahahaha.
-----when i was in philly this past weekend i hit up repo records and walked away with a nice bounty. i don't do a lot of record shopping anymore cuz, as you fools know, i am the reigning digital music queen at this point, but i did pick up a few goodies. my loot included a warpaint poster [which i wasn't technically supposed to remove from the wall and hide in my friends bag, but shhh don't tell anyone] a pair of tristeza 7inches, a milemarker 7inch, another random 7inch that was only $2 and had interesting cover art, and two dorky presidential speech records all for under $20. i will say they have good prices in that joint and a really good amount of treats in there considering it's a pretty small space. i took a trip into the basement and they have tons of random vinyl down there for super cheap. next time i go back, i'm gonna take a trip down there and see what i can unearth...as well as see if i can make off with the sebadoh bakesale poster. oh wait did i just say that? hahahaha. i do have one gripe and that is, i hate how they put the price stickers directly on the cover of the records and not on the poly sleeves cuz it leaves residue and that sucks [and in the case of the milemarker slab, it didn't fully come off. ugh!] i know they do it to prevent shrinkage and people walking off with stuff or ticket switching but a thief is a thief and they are gonna swipe shit no matter where the price sticker is stuck so be nice to the collectors and don't eff up their record covers!!!
-----hey! just getting the link to the sebadoh site i found out they have a new album of all new material coming out in september! yay! first time in fourteen years they have new stuff coming out. it's called  defend yourself and i can't wait to get my ears on that shit yo. and i missed a new EP by them too? damn i need to keep more up to date on shit! i blame not having my laptop for five weeks.
-----scope LeftyFretz a site i recently discovered that is devoted to lefty guitarists. it features up to date info on new gear and who has what in lefty. pretty cool shit. i'm going to look deeper into some of the companies they feature to see if i wanna give em a shout too! afterall, you haven't made it until you're mentioned on hoosatron.com! hahahahahahahahaha. now if only there was a site or even a forum for lefty drummers! i'll put that on my list of things to do. haha.
-----i just ordered a new copy of the secret diary of laura palmer which is a companion to the show twin peaks of course. i can't find my old copy tho actually i think i loaned it to someone at my old job and never got it back. it is a pretty rad book and gives a lot more depth and insight into the character and her motivations, that you never would have gotten from the show alone considering she's already dead when the show starts. and heck i got a good deal on it! less than $6! can't beat that shit.
-----i just found out that this chick i was with like forever ago still has the cat she had when i was with her [which was like thirteen years ago] the cat is now seventeen and is said to be still feisty and in good health. awww! i hope my babies all live to be to very, very old little bundles of purry joy and are way older than seventeen when they finally have to leave me.
-----it has just occurred to me that i have yet to hear or DL the new daft punk record cuz it came out when i didn't have my laptop back yet and i'm still getting caught up on shit to DL. i'm gonna get on that schniz right away yo.

milemarker-"sex jam one: sexual machinery" [tho the 7inch i nabbed is titled "the sex jams" this song is actually not on it. this track appears on the album frigid forms sell]

"sex jam two: insect incest" [this track is also on the album and actually is on "the sex jams" 7inch. this band was/is pretty odd and sings about some pretty....interesting stuff. haha. this was the first track i ever heard by them on a comp i think back like ten years ago. i have a lot of their catalog, i just need to take some time out to sit and really delve deeper into it cuz i've admittedly only given them casual listening's thus far. that is sometimes the bi-product of having so much damn music to pick from, and when i go on mass DLing adventures and nab a lot of stuff at once, some stuff doesn't get the full attention it deserves. i'm glad i found that 7inch tho so it could jog my memory to sit down in depth with these guys]

i'm sitting here looking at my computer screen not quite sure what to say. haha. i could make some lame joke about the weather cuz it's raining again. one day it's nice the next day it's shit....sounds like that could be the basis for some kind of character for a sitcom. haha. or apparently a murder mystery cuz yesterday in the town i grew up in [which i'm ten miles from and my parents still live in] there was a car with a body in it discovered in a reservoir. damn. though at this point, they are leaning more towards suicide than murder, but still creeeeepsville tho! double damn! alright, i got shit. read on kiddies.

-i finally have my laptop back. not sure i mentioned that yet or not. woot! no more using steve's cheap plastic box toy laptop from 1983. yesssss!!!!!
-i usually resist DLing the itunes updates for as long as possible but idk, i ended up DLing the most recent one pretty quickly and ugh it is so awful. like sooooo sooooo bad. idk, maybe since i don't make it a habit of staying up to date with the updates, the changes were gradual, but it seems to me that they changed so much all at once and made it sooooo much more difficult to deal with. everything used to seem so easy, just drag and drop but now it seems so un-user friendly and so counter-intuitive. i've had to read/watch tutorials to figure out how to use it. wtf is that shit?! damn! like who should have to do that for itunes? i have a huge amount of music to manage so i want something easy not some weirdo ass shit. hahaha. efff this noise!
-i caught the very tail end of ladyfest philly this past sunday and took in a few bands. i had other stuff going on over the weekend, both at home and in philly, otherwise i would have liked to have attended the whole three day event and caught some panels and more bands. i was able to see screaming females and they were on fire and super energetic as always. it was nice seeing them with a mostly female crowd too cuz there wasn't crazy asshole male aggression and a moshpit didn't immediately open up. one stupid girl ended up starting one about five songs in so i went off to the side, cuz i hate that selfish shit and don't want to deal with it, but it still wasn't as bad as the last time i saw them when dumb rocker dudes went apeshit during the first song and just made it miserable to be up front. this was their first tour back out since singer/guitarist marissa was knocked out of commission by a mystery illness and it was like they never missed a beat.  i was also able to catch trophy wife, who are a ridiculously amazing duo who just shred with an intensity and dissonant fantasticness that seeps into my bones. i missed the first part of their set, but was very impressed with what i did hear and was fortunately able to obtain both of their records, patience fury and sing what scares you [i DLd them when i got home. they have cds and LPs available tho and the LPs come with DL cards]  i did take a min to seek out their drummer and talk to her cuz she is a fellow lefty and we gotta support each other [this is something no righty musician EVER understands but it is so true] she was super duper nice and managed a whole line of admirers at the merch table and seemed really genuine with everyone. i think they are from DC and i sure as hell can't wait to see them again.
-speaking of sitcoms, i've been re-watching arrested development in preparation to finally take a stab at the new season on netflix. i have heard mixed things about it, some people loved it, some hated it, but i'm gonna see for myself. i just finished season one. god, i miss the fukked up genius of this show. hahaha. from the choppy way it was shot to the insane innuendos peppering the dialog, watching this fukked up family brings me so much joy. haha.
-i have to say, i was soooooo super excited for the new boards of canada but upon my first precursory listen, i'm not feeling as excited anymore. not much has stood out to me as strong material and i gotta say i'm pretty sad about that. i know i have to give it  more of a chance and spin it around a few more times, but my first impression of it is unfortunately weak. a song near the end of the collection "new seeds" has some promise, but is it enough to save this album for me? hmmmmmmmmm

veruca salt

veruca salt-american thighs

+++++

i was laying in bed last night thinking about who i would write about for this lovely tuesday and i was like....hmmm....what about veruca salt? but not them really as a band, rather just them as the band that made the record american thighs cuz honestly i didn't really care for hardly anything they did afterwards. alright, yeah i do enjoy eight arms to hold you and it had some songs i really liked, but it is a little over-produced for my tastes and nothing kills a record faster for me than that. i know, harsh but...whatevs, sorry! haha. but yeah, i have always liked their first record and thought it was the best thing they did as a band. it came out in 1994 and i became aware of it after hearing the song "seether" that fall. i think i also saw a profile of them along with weezer on mtv's week in rock which i faithfully watched every saturday at noon. i purchased the album with my christmas money that year [along with green day's dookie]. being only thirteen at the time, i didn't quite grasp the concept of an album as a total collection because up until that point, i had really only been exposed to singles and individual tracks as a band so i mostly gravitated to the singles from the album and the more upbeat songs. it took me a few years to fully appreciate the scope of the record, and i still enjoy it very much to this day. there are some blistering highs, but even more so, a very intimate and breezy quiet side to many of the songs, which is most likely the reason my immature ears had trouble getting into it at first, more so than just the "total package" thing i mentioned before. i was not used to dynamics and softness at all in music; i knew loud and i wanted more loud, lots more loud! more than many bands, or records, they really taught me to appreciate what different types of things could be done in the context of rock music and that it didn't have to always be loud and crazed at all times. as of this year, the original lineup that made this record, nina gordon, louise post, jim shapiro, and steve lack are re-united though i am uncertain if they are going to tour or make new music or what they are up to. go check out their official facebook page. yeah!

+++++

randomy...

-in between american thighs and eight arms they recorded an EP with steve albini called blow it out your ass, it's veruca salt. i think i might have it somewhere on vinyl....gotta investigate that and search through my records [i really, REALLY, need to do that. i keep saying....]
-what i do know i have on vinyl-since i'm looking at it right now-is the single for "number one blind" it was released as a 10" and i probably acquired it at some point in the late 90s. it's pretty sweet looking, pressed on creamy pink vinyl. the song list is pretty rad too, cuz of course it includes the single "number one blind," but it also has four non-album tracks as well and good ones too, not just lame live "bonus" tracks that so many bands of the era used as filler. i really like the second song "straight," [that would go on to be the leadoff song on eight arms] and they have a really interesting and super mellow take on "bodies" by the sex pistols. it also has one of my fav VS songs on it, "aurora," which additionally appears on the 1995 soundtrack for tank girl [which was "supervised," or whatever word they used, by courtney love. she did a good job cuz it was seriously one of my fav soundtracks of all time]
-only someone who has their head under a rock doesn't know this...but...they took their name from the horrible rich brat character, veruca salt, in children's book charlie and the chocolate factory [and later the movie willy wonka and the chocolate factory]
-nina gordon left VS in 1998 to pursue a solo career. she went on to record one of the best covers of all time, ever in the history of ever, "straight outta compton" which was so masterfully written by N.W.A.
-speaking of all of these covers, on the "victrola" single, there was a cover of the knack's "my sharona." on the cd version there is an additional song called "sundown" that was recorded live, though i'm not sure where. it doesn't really sound like a live cut to me...there is no crowd noise, so idk about that, but it is a pretty rad song in my book.
-the little "seether" breakdown in "volcano girls" where they say "here's another clue if you please, the seether's louise" i always thought was cheesy and i wish it wasn't there. haha.
-i remember the stupid rhyme people would say "sounds like the breeders" to the chorus of "seether" and i always thought that was so so dumb cuz they sound nothing like the breeders. but i guess that was typical of the time, omg women leading a rock band and the men were in the back, oh no, let's all throw them in the same pot and compare them and not let them have their own distinct identities. lamesauce yo.

oooooo colored vinyl how i love you so!

"seether" [couldn't leave this one out. i was always impressed with their super clean looking gibson guitars]

"aurora" [nifty cover art. man, i love this song. i love the recording and how you can hear the prominent squeak of the guitar strings as they changed chords...this was kind of a hallmark of their early sound]

girl don't tell me a lie

painting today. then building stuff. yah!!!!

+++++

i was listening to the vivian girls surf's up 7" and that's where the title of this post comes from. haha. VG are a band i really WANT to like, but i can only take in short doses cuz well....all of their songs sound exactly the same and the recording quality on many of them leaves a lot to be desired [on most of the earliest ones, you can't even hear the kick drum and being a drummer, that is really super irksome to me] i know, i'm a bitch, but that's just the way i feel! i have to tell you how i FEEL!!! hahahaha. yeah. anyway, i'm taking a break from doing work around the house and painting to do this post. i'm working on cleaning up shit that steve and i have been lazy pigs about and making the house into less of an episode of hoarders, and more of a little secret clubhouse for two overgrown pre-pubescent boys in their early 30s. hahahahaha. it's also to turn my living room into a mini practice space for my music projects cuz, while i have my parent's basement, i can only use it at certain times, like when they are at work monday thru friday, since as my mom says "i'm old, i'm going to be 63 and don't want to hear all that noise!!!!" hahaha. though, don't get me wrong, i'm really appreciative that they let me use it for my stuff and are supportive. but yeah, having another little space to use on weekends and at odd times will help a lot. on the music front, there are going to be some big announcements soon...i'm not quiet ready to divulge anything, but just so you hookers all know, some news is coming. sit tight on that! okay yo, read on, read on!

+++++

randomy...

-you people know i love me some buffy and boy do i! i'm excited cuz the season nine comics are now available in the trade books [aka all the issues of one arc compiled together in one bigger book]. i like them better cuz i'm so bad at keeping up with the individual episodes and making all those trips to the comic store. and they just look nicer cuz you can put them all together on a book shelf and kind of display them. anyway, i'm gonna pick those babies up this weekend when i go to philly which should be rad. i randomly saw on the huffington post a conversation with alyson hannigan regarding "her character's groundbreaking lesbian relationship" [omg i have such a crush on her. if she ever divorces her husband, i will sooooooo send her love letters and flowers and try to win her sexy ginger heart!] it's awesome to see she is still committed to the LGBT community and this character that she so brilliantly brought to life and gave such depth to, even after the show has been off the air for ten years.
-so i was listening to coldplay the other day and i was like "wtf is this guy complaining and whining about ALL THE FUKKING TIME?!?!" i mean, yeah i do like them and have listened to them since their first album, but sometimes the babyishness and whineyness of chris martin's lyrics really get to me. i mean, what does this guy have to complain so much about? he has a beautiful wife [gwyneth paltrow] and two lovely children, he has money and acclaim but on an even more basic level, he has food to eat and a roof over his head and he has his health which is sadly a lot more than over a billion people on this planet can say. i'm not trying to be so high and mighty and act like i'm not ever emotional, or even overly so, cuz i sure as hell am, but to write song after song after song...after song about misery is a bit much. geeeez!!!!
-i'm an avid fan of spray paint and have used krylon for years. the other day i was at the store and all they had was rustoleum which i begrudgingly purchased cuz i didn't feel like going somewhere else. i'm glad i did cuz i realized it is awesome and is sooooo much better than krylon. it covers way better, the nozzles are much bigger and easier to use, and they amount of coats i had to use was half of that with krylon. shit son, i guess i'm not the krylon kid anymore! hahaha [interesting factoid....you regular readers all know i am a hardcore lefty and do 98% of everything in daily life with my left hand, but oddly, spray painting is not one of them. i use my left hand to paint with a brush or a pallet knife, but not to spray paint. hmmm....weeeeird!]
-i've been thinking about maybe doing a paper zine again....something small and like a one-off, not like an actual series again. shit, i have this blog for that! haha. but yeah, something special and maybe more personal like the old zine i had in college fischer on fire...hmmmm....we'll seeeeeeeee
-i'm not even lying when i say this but "bootylicious" just came up on shuffle. yeah man, every punk rock kid has some secret guilty pleasures so i feel absolutely ZERO SHAME in having destiny's child on my ipod. hahahaha. i don't think you're ready for this hoosy jelly! hahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
-i went to staten island pride this weekend and it was really the first pride thing i'd ever gone to. i don't really do pride stuff and i'm not into big huge fests or anything but this was smaller and more low-key. it was pretty rad and my good pals plastiq passion and clinical trials both rocked out and i always love going to their shows and hanging. lots of fun yo! though, i am the worst gay ever apparently cuz i own nothing rainbow and don't like anything rainbow either. hahaha. ooooh well, so sue me! haha.
-i still don't have my laptop back and it's been a month. i'm about ready to go lay the smack down on that guy fixing it or rather who is "fixing" it the problem now is his fault, cuz it wasn't happening until AFTER i brought it in for him to fix the first time. he replaced the entire bottom of it and then as soon as i got it back, the speakers and headphone jack no longer worked. idkwtf this guy did to it, but he better get his act together and fix it. and no i'm not paying for it and yes i will be finding a place online to post negative reviews about his business and tell people not to go there, ever. ugh. fukk that! so yeah to start, DON'T go to laptop md in pompton plains, nj. just don't. ugh.

+++++

speaking of coldplay, my friends clinical trials do a friggen amazing cover of "yellow" that sounds nothing at all  like the original [my fav kind of cover!] that they totally fukkin shred. i was lucky enough to see them play TWICE this past weekend. soooo sooooo good! they are an awesome duo who describe themselves as "electro-grunge unicorn-riding badasses from a land of whiskey waterfalls" yeah, i'd say that is pretty accurate! haha. i took this pic with my phone and the flash was being all weird...i edited it with snapseed and it looks better, almost kind of frantic in a way and like i intended it to be like that, but it was kind of a "happy accident" hahaha. but yeah, i really need to start bringing out my dSLR again to at least shoot my friends bands and then work back into shooting bigger bands. i really miss it. one of these days, i'll start posting more of my old band stuff for you hookers to see....anyhoo, enough of that, fukking get your ass to a CT show if you know what is good for you and go to their bandcamp to DL their blistering music. they play pretty frequently in the NYC area and just played in boston last week....i think they're also planning to tour this summer...not 100% sure on that one, but check their website and like their fb page yo!

+++++

le tigre "after dark" [diplo  remix] [if i'm not mistaken, i think i have this remix album on vinyl...hmmm....i don't remember though and i have yet to go through my LPs and organize them. i guess i'll find out as soon as i take care of that. hahaha. but yeah, i like this remix even better than the original track, and i'm rocking out to it inside in the AC as an attempt to beat the heat....it's not working though cuz i'm still sweating! hahaha and oooooo i just noticed on their website, they have some live tracks available for free DL, shit yeah!]
