-i've been going through a lot of old photographs and my old sketchbooks lately. there was a time before i felt so disconnected and its all there in those books and photos. i'm working on reclaiming that in my life.
-hate the new gmail. just saying.

-i broke out the turntable this morning and spun one of my all time favorite LPs, the "instrument" soundtrack by fugazi. with the morning sunlight streaming in the window, it made for a pretty awesome listen.

i mentioned the lunachicks a post or two ago and it got my mind thinking about the time i saw them in 1999. it was the only time i saw them but it was a kick ass show and i got to meet them and hang out for a little bit which was totally fucking rad. anyway i took pics and though they aren't the greatest pics i've ever taken (if memory serves correctly i didn't use an SLR) i decided to dig up the negatives and get them reprinted. there were a few i liked and here they are. now hopefully they'll reunite and i can see them play again. here's hoping. on a side note, the lunachicks were the first heavily tattooed women i saw when i was younger and they mde me start to think about getting tattooed myself. now i'm heavily tattooed and get looks from youngins. haha

-finally listened to the latest joe lally (bassist of fugazi) solo record "why should i get used to it" and its seriously good. his best solo recording to date. it was recorded in italy in 2010 and released earlier this year and i was a little behind the times getting to listen to it. "nothing to lose" is prob my fav track of the bunch, its a short bouncy number which is a nice break from some of the more serious songs he's laid down. when he comes over to the states i would love to see him live; hopefully that can happen sometime this year.
-i need a 2012 calendar. i should get on that shit.
-on new years eve i was reminded of what a great record the first weezer album is. its too bad their later output wasn't at the same level, for me they fell off after "pinkerton" but whateves. to this day i still credit them with being the first rock band i really got heavily into and the reason why i'm in a band today (though the resaon why i play drums is "live through this" era hole). i bought that cd in october of 1994 and played it non stop for months. thats some good shit.
-i'm loving the fact that i can hook my laptop up to my new tv. hot shit.
-i dont think i fully undertand the timelone layout on facebook...i'm still debating if i should change my profile to that or not. such hard choices in life! haha

rahim-enduring love [what ever happened to this band? i started listening to them in 2006 and saw them play that summer-they were really good-but then i never really heard much of them again. it seems like they just stopped playing which sucks because they really had some good shit going. this is one of my favorite songs by them and kind of fitting with the title of this post. the record this song comes from "ideal lives" is a really good disc too. def worth looking up]

-i got a new tv for xmas. santy claus was good to ol hoosy.
-people say i'm hard to shop for when it comes to gift giving so i end up with a lot of giftcards, namely i tunes ones. while i'm always appreciative to be thought of i am not a fan of itunes cards cuz i don't like the whole thing on when you DL from itunes you don't really own the track, you have to authorize computers and shit. if i pay for it it should be mine to do what i will with it. this is why i've always been a fan of emusic cuz its buy to own. i've used them for years and their selection is really starting to grow. the only drawback is that its a monthly subscription service so you can just DL albums randomly like you can with itunes and you can sample the songs before hand. though actually i think you might be able to now...i gotta look into that shit
-blogger is being mad stupid and keeps freezing as i'm trying to type entries.
-portlandia is on netflix. hell yeah! "the dream of the 90s is alive in portland"

-so i mentioned last post that el ten eleven made me wanna go out and buy 50 effects pedals for my guitar. haha. well i didn't buy 50 but i did buy a loop station which i've been wanting for a while. shit yeah. and also totally rad is they have a list on their website of all the equipment they use which is really expansive and awesome to read through.
-i've learned a bunch of random and interesting factoids in my computer class such as the first email was sent in 1971 and that youtube is the second largest search engine on the web. hmmm interesting indeed.
-john lindaman of true love always has 2 new e.p.s out and is doing some live performances as well. if i wasn't working, i'd head over to nyc to check this out.
-"low level owl" volume one and two is an amazing pair of albums by the appleseed cast which i have been rocking the last few days. def brings back a lot of old memories of days gone by.
-i really miss playing hockey. if i ever work during the day again i'm going to get back on that shit.
-just snagged tickets to see thurston moore at maxwells in february. def excited to see him play and in such a small venue.
-so kim jong-il kicked the bucket. i know this has major implications for the world but all i can think of is the 30rock episode where margaret cho plays him and how awesome it is. hahaha. there are like no youtube clips of that shit either except for her doing the weather as him but that shit is on netflix and is friggen hysterical. watch that shit.

beat happening-sleepyhead [i like to think of myself in this song cuz i'm a sleepyhead during the day when everyone else is working. haha. i count BH among my musical influences, not because i'm a huge fan of them or anything cuz i'm really not but because of their raw energy. they couldn't really play that well and were very basic in their song structure/instrumentation but they never let that slow them down at all. you've gotta respect drive like that. so what if they aren't technical wizards, its about the raw power and tenacity. i feel the same way about bands like bratmobile whose early material is golden and emilys sassy lime whose "some deaths take forever" 7" still makes me weak in the knees more than a decade and a half later.]

-on nights that i'm off i try to stick to my normal sleep pattern (doesn't always work) but its perfect time for doing homework and blogging. but even better, for exploring the depths of my vast music collection. i'm pushing 24,000 songs on my ipod and so some shit naturally gets lost in the shuffle (pardon the pun) and forgotten about. such as christian death cuz i completely forgot i had any of their stuff on my ipod. ain't that some shit.
-i've been re-reading my old blog from 05 and 06 (thats where i nabbed the gossip pic) and it was a whole other era in my world. its interesting to go back now and read it. the girl i was with then. the bands i was in then. the shows i went to. the things i did. working during the day. it all seems light years away now. sigh.
-so if you haven't watched the "hitler finds out" videos on youtube you so need to cuz that shit is HILARIOUS!!! but i was also curious to see the movie that the clip was taken from, downfall. as luck would have it, it is available to stream on netflix so the other night i watched it. its entirely in german and there is some really fine acting throughout. it details the final 12 days of the third reich and is very well done. def recommend it for you history nerds and foreign film viewers. i just couldn't take the one scene seriously. haha.
-early christmas presents of fuzzy robot pj pants rule. just saying.
-sometimes a little late night ac dc doesn't hurt.

el ten eleven-hot cakes [so... i love this band. i love instrumental music in general and especially when its upbeat and dynamic like this. what amazed me to find out was that they were only a 2 piece band because they have such a layered sound. i figured it was just shit they did in the studio and i didn't think much of it again until i saw some live videos of them and was blown away by exactly how they craft their sound. its fucking awesome and it makes me love them even more. and the fact that their drummer is a lefty like me? well thats just the cherry on top. i'm a nerd for lefty drummers cuz there are so few of us. yeah phil collins! i was thinking about going to see them over the summer and i ended up not going which i really regret. i NEED to see this band live. it makes me want to go out and buy 50 pedals and start trying my hand at this kind of shit. so inspiring]

-so i currently have work up at LITM in jersey city for their annual little wonders show. and awesomely enough...not to brag or anything...oh hell, yes to brag, all of my work sold before the show even opened! hell yeah! one piece sold before it even got hung as another artist was their dropping of her work and liked it and snagged it before it made it to the wall. i haven't done as many shows this year but the few i have done i've had great results at. shit yeah.
-love is riding around in your car with 3 other awesome people (aka my super rad band mates and my dearest steve) and pumping out the 60s jams on the radio. yeah thats love.

-Violet Hour was in the studio the other night and it was AWESOME! we recorded 3 songs and we just got the first one back and it sounds so good. we are going to be releasing them via our website which will also be launching very soon so stay tuned for that shit! we're talking shows at this point and hope to get the ball rolling on that within a month or so.
-this is going to sound a little contradictory but i really hate people who feel the need to complain about everything. like for real. i know some people who just complain for complainings sake and its really irritating. they're the kind of people that if you hand them $20 instead of saying thanks they'll complain that you didn't hand them $40. jesus i'm so over it.
-i can't believe its december already. my betty white calendar is almost done! shit son!
-fugazi live series a-z is a series of live shows being released by dischord for download. there are currently 130 shows available and there is a total of 800+ shows that they plan to release. fugazi is one of my all time favorite bands and i so wish i could have seen them play live. to my knowledge they never officially broke up and just went on hiatus. even though its been since 2001 that they released anything new i still hold out hope that they'll work on new material and play out again. we'll see. and as pointless trivia for you suckaz, ian mackaye and i have the same bday, april 16th though he is 19years older than me. also you can go here with an interview with mr.mackaye on the new live series.

-i've recently developed a new found appreciation of fleetwood mac. good shit yo.

-i'm starting to get the itch for some new tattoos soon. the last ink i got was over the summer (including one i did myself on myself!) and i was thinking i want to get some shading on my left sleeve to tighten it up and "manitas" (spanish for little hands) on my right wrist. after that i want to get started on my left leg sleeve that i've been thinking about for a while. i still haven't completely decided what i want but i'm leaning towards traditional pieces that can be done one at a time and all be shaded together so i can do it a little at time and not have it looked unfinished. i might still go with a big epic piece but i'm not sure what to do. i had the thought to do a revolutionary war themed piece since that imagery was all around my house when i grew up (my parents were married in 1975 and decorated their first house with bicentennial decor) but i also thought of rockets and robots. idk. in any case i want it to be a definate cohesive statement as my arms and right leg are both kind of random. any suggestions?

-i'm a few weeks late but i'm currently DLing david lynch's first album "crazy clown time" that was released on 11/7. i've read good reviews on it so far. i'm sure it will be interesting to say the least. and speaking of mr.lynch i also just DLd the soundtrack to twin peaks (which was done by angelo badalamenti). i think its time to rewatch it in its entirety again.

-i've been thinking about jawbreaker a lot lately and what an epically good band they were. they were absolutely MASSIVE in my life when i was a teenager even though they broke up before i really got into them heavily (when i made zines i devoted a page to them in every issue). i learned a great deal about drumming from playing along to their records. anyhoo they have some great one liners in their lyrics ("if i were a vampire i wouldn't suck your blood" and "i would kill for more i haven't killed before") and i was thinking as a tribute to them and my love for them i would kindly borrow some of those lines and write some lyrics off of them for some violet hour songs. i've been trying my hand at writing lyrics and wrote one of our songs so i figure why not try writing some more. we'll see what happens. we shallsee

-i'm taking a computer literacy class and its all hard and shit. ew! but the history of computers that we covered so far has been very interesting. its mind boggling to think that the computers we carry around with us anywhere and everywhere and can't live without (aka our cell phones) are tiny compared to the massive computers from the 40s and 50s that took up whole rooms. and that yet they out perform them ten thousand fold. not to mention the world i was born into and what it is now a mere 30years later. it really does fascinate me. i'm sure i'll spout off about more on this subject over the course of the next 6 weeks.

dirty on purpose- monument [this is one of my favorite instrumental tracks by a non instrumental band. anyone who knows me knows i love instrumental music and i always enjoy it when a band that doesn't normally do no vocals takes a stab at it. this is an exceptional track and makes me wish they did more instrumentals]

mogwai-mexican grand prix [and as a little twist here is a track with vocals from one of the greatest instrumental bands of all time. they have vocals on one or two other tracks from earlier releases but 99.9% of their songs are sans vocals. this track is from their newest album "hardcore will never die but you will" which is one of their best releases to date. anyway i was very suprised on first listen to hear this track with vocals (albeit heavily vocoded ones) but it is one of the standouts from the record. i saw them play a few years ago and really want to see them again when they come to the states. hopefully that will happen soon cuz they are great live]

-my ass has been very lazy lately as i haven't posted anything new since september. i've just been busy working and with school and the band. i know, excuses, excuses! haha. anyway....here goes...
-since last time i posted my band officially named ourselves (and came up with a secret handshake which of course i can't divulge in public), i'm pleased to introduce violet hour! we have 10 songs written and are ready to rock your ass off. haha. we plan to start playing gigs starting in january and will be in the recording studio to lay down 2 tracks on the 30th of this month. a website is also in process of being made which will launch soon and have the songs once they are recorded. i will of course keep all you hookers updated of our progress and expect all of my readers to attend our shows.
-the wonder years on netflix is one of the best things to have happened to me recently. haha
-the worst part of this time of year? i work in retail. ugh. the best part of this time of year? getting to buy new little kid pjs to wear!
-i unearthed my old blog from 05/06 and found a lot of good pics on there, especially of bands i saw back then. i should repost them here. hmmm....

-so i've been m.i.a. the last few weeks. just been busy working a lot and dealing with stupid hurricanes. ugh. but i'm back at it now yo.
-just DL'd the new balam acab full length "wander/wonder" haven't had much of a chance to give it a proper listen but i'll get there. i'm def excited for more and hopefully it'll be as good as the ep.
-hoosy is getting the band back together. well not really "back together" as i'm not reforming my either of my old bands (and techincally the okfl never broke up but have been on a 9 year hiatus. we will never die!) but i started a new one. i'm excited to be drumming/playing music again, it feels so good. we haven't named ourselves yet but our fake name is the bitch killers. hahahaha. and no we will not ACTUALLY be calling ourselves that, we will come up with a good and proper name. we've got like 5 songs cooking though which is cool. more details to come as things shape up.
-i mentioned above that i've been playing guitar a lot lately which is true. and also true is that my one cat, bella-bop, loves to come and snuggle up against me and head butt me and purr loudly while i'm playing. its so adorable. she knows how to rock!
-buffy season 9 is upon us and i'm excited about it. the first issue is out on the 14th and i will def be at the shop that day to pick it up along with the next issue of dollhouse and angel and faith.

-buffy season 9 will be kicking off in just over a month which i'm excited about. books #1 and #2 are on pre-order now. angel and faith is also kicking off at the end of this month and is on pre-order as well. this is a separate book but takes place concurrent to season 9.
-only in fucking jersey can you get stuck in mind-boggling bumper to bumper traffic verging on an atrocity...at 1:30 in the morning. and the best part? when you finally pass by the work area 500 hours later, you see the workers just sitting on the median chilling and no actual work going on. great!
-i love when i've been at someone else's house who has cats and then i come home and my own cats inspect me by sniffing every inch of my clothing. they especially love to do this with my bags too.
-the highlight of my recent life? figuring out a beat happening song on guitar all by myself. i consider this a huge accomplishment considering i suck at guitar. haha. and btw practicing guitar at 5am is the bees knees. just saying.
-i just bought a new crash cymbal which is super duper exciting. its the first cymbal purchase i've made in almost 10 years.
-i love tobacco and can't wait til i go see black moth super rainbow next month.

the sundays-wild horses (the rolling stones) [right after i did the covers shuffalump, i realized i had unfortunately neglected to include this song. i love this cover, it gets my heart everytime; i def like it better than the orginal. i like the echoey/reverby electric guitar effects and the vocals make me just melt. i feel like the stones version is good but its too twangy for my taste. its funny that so many of the covers i like i enjoy more than the orginal. its nice to hear other interpretations i guess. the cover version of this song was in a the season 3 prom episode of buffy and fits the scene its in very well]

SONIC YOUTH- bull in the heather/youth against fascism [i've listened to SY sporadically over the years but never got super into them. lately though, i've been listening to them a lot and have been working on filling in the holes in my collection of their impressively large catalog of music. i picked "bull in the heather" because it was the fist SY song i ever heard and i just really dig "youth against fascism" i wish i had listened to them more in depth when i was younger but i had a hard time with music that wasn't easily accessable-prob why i like "bull in the heather" because its an easy song to get introduced to them with. as i've gotten older though i've really embraced their complex stuff and like to get lost in the textures and layers. i'm just delving now into their "SYR" series of records that they've been putting out in addition to their studio albums since about 1997 which feature mostly instrumetal and experimental tracks. i had a chance to see SY in 2004 (patti smith played too!) and below is a shot i got at that gig]

i thought i'd do something a little different for the 13th installment of the mighty shuffalump. rather than turning to my trusty ipod (which is hovering at the 22,000 song mark) i decided i would pick out some songs on my own so i decided to go with cover songs and picked some of my favs. i know there are tons of other great covers out there but i kept the list short. as you know i've been starting to post videos for the song i use in the regular posts, a song of the day if you will, and i've been doing it so you peeps can hear what the hell i'm talking about on the spot. i'm not going to do that for every shuffalump cuz it would just get to be too much and a lot of stuff i have isn't on youtube; in fact some of the covers i really liked and picked for the list had to be left off cuz i couldn't find videos and i have no technical know-how to make my own! haha. some of the originals you def know, others you may not, but they're all on itunes so you can sample them there (really i checked) if you wanna hear them. i will return soon with another shuffalump, for now, read on and listen up!

lou barlow-bulletproof (la roux)

i like both versions of this song pretty equally. i love the orginal cuz its so catchy and i really enjoy LB's lowkey interpretation of it.

wesley willis-girls on film (duran duran)

omg this fucking cover RULES! i do really enjoy the orginal, but wesley willis just kills it in his version!

ben gibbard-indian summer (beat happening)

this is one of those covers that i like better than the orginal. i really enjoy beat happening but calvin johnson's voice can get a little grating for me at times. i think ben gibbard is a gifted songwriter and performer and this cover is honestly breathtaking. it made me feel so free and like i was 15 years younger. this song is a bit of magic.

cowboy junkies-sweet jane (velvet underground)

i also enjoy this cover more than the orginal. i think that CJ's did better with the tempo/timing of the song and i like the vocals better. sorry lou reed!

nirvana-mollys lips (the vaselines)

i enjoy both versions of this song, though with a slight leaning towards nirvana. that probably stems from being a teenager in the 90s and shit like nirvana was epic to me. the vaselines were obscure and out of reach to a 14 year old hoosy but fortunately that changed when i got older.

cat power-sea of love (phil phillips)

both versions of this song are really great but for different reasons. cat power really nails the emotion for me, and i like how the instrumentation/arrangement is a lot different than the orginal. as for that, i just love 50s music in general so this is like a little smile for me every time i hear the phil phillips version. the cover version was in "juno" and really was a great fit for the scene it was in.

bratmobile-cherry bomb (the runaways)

oh i fucking loved the bratmobile version as a teenager!!! i also loved the album it was on "pottymouth" i like the runaways version but i honestly think bratmobile did it better because it was so much spunkier and with way more fucking snarky attitude from allison wolfe...and their lack of musicianship just adds a certain charm for me. i saw joan jett perform this about 10 years ago and she still ripped it up.

cassettes wont listen-the freed pig (sebadoh)

i love sebadoh, they are one of my favorite bands ever, but i just like the CWL version of this song better. the original seems flat to me and doesn't resonate like so many other sebadoh tracks do for me. i was suprised that an electro act was covering sebadoh in the first place but it really works. this is a great electronic interpretation of a rock song.

-i've been rocking tribe 8 recently and i had forgotten how much i love them. they def were one of the most influential dyke bands out there and certainly had a big influence on my life too. i got to see lead singer lynn breedlove perform spoken word about 10 years ago, but sadly never got to see the band play. damn.
-i'm taking sociology right now. on one hand i feel okay with it, but on the other hand i'm not that great at it, but i accept that fact. haha.
-everyone needs a little belle and sebastian in their lives now and again.
-friends by far a foreign language mp3 blog which i believe is portuguese though i don't know enough of the language to be sure. i don't understand the posts but there are some damn good tracks on here.

i can't draw (you don't have to draw to be an artist!) and would never really ever be able to hack it as a tattoo artist (much love and respect to all those who can and who have left their mark upon my skin) but i still have long been curious about it and have wanted to try it. i got my wish recently when i was able to ink myself with a perfect piece. i had found some drawings my nephew did when he was four (he's six now) and i just loved them and knew one in particular was the best of the bunch and i had to get it inked. i had intended for my friend leo to ink it on me but then i got to joking about how i wanted to tattoo something on myself and he said he'd help me out with it. when it came time for the actual tattoo, i still hadn't figured out what i wanted to tattoo myself with til leo asked if my nephews drawing was what i wanted to ink myself with. it was like the lightbulb instantly went off in my head! haha. it was the perfect thing to do and with his guidance i was able to bang out the best damn four legged vampire-bug creature thingie tattoo ever! the lines may be choppy and a little jagged but i couldn't love it more and i can't wait to show it to my lil buddy. as for my future as a tattoo artist, i think that this was likely the start and end of my tattooing career all at once but it sure was fun. and now i can always say that yes, i have in fact tattooed someone. thanks to dennis for taking the pics!

i've been sitting on this post for a few weeks partly due to lazyness and partly due to the fact that ive been busy writing for school. i feel like i've been churning out research papers right and left. fun times. but the good news being that i got an A on the big paper i did on the history of land transportation in the US since 1865. woot woot! i also took a trip to boston which was fun times (and i had to work on a paper while there too. grumble grumble) and we saw a lot of good shit including stops at the sam adams brewery and the institute of contemporary art which had a really rad show "the record: contemporary art and vinyl". always true to my geek form, i also got some good comic book and thrift scores on the road as well (though most of it was goodies for steve!) and made sure to leave my hoosy mark along the way with stickers going up in boston, salem, and providence RI. speaking of which, the new 2011 version of the HOOS sticker came in just after i arrived home but i will have them out and about with me (the first one went up in atlantic city, nj yesterday) and at shows. and speaking of that...i have a show on 7/28/11 at gallery u in montclair, nj where i will have stickers and more importantly 2 brand new, never before seen pieces! i will have pics up after the show but in the meantime, mark your calendars for the 28th and get yer asses there!

BONOBO-all in forms [i love bonobo and especially the latest record, "black sands" which this track is on. this affects me on such a deep level, inside my head, my heart, my soul and i usually have to listen to it a few times before i can move on. i think what really does it for me is the guitar loops and the haunting vocals. they just infect me]

aka shuffalump volume 12. yes it is the dozenth (is that a word?) installment of the shuffalump. this is a quicky that i did as i was getting ready for bed a while back and forgot about. i thought i'd post it for the hell of it. as of right now the hoosatronic ipod is up to 21,764 songs and counting. shit son! who knows what #13 of the ol lumpy lump will bring! its a mystery! haha. read on for now and you shall find out about #13 soon enough.

THE AVENGERS- thin white line (live) [the avengers are a band that i don't listen to very frequently but when i do i always enjoy my time with them. this is a blistering live version from their complete recordings and its a good quality recording that captures the band well]

EMPEROR X petroleum caliphate [i recently had a suprise in that i was out in jersey city and emperor x was playing a free show. he played a lot of his newer material which i am not as familiar with, but he did a few oldies too which i def enjoyed. this is a particularly short tune with some subtle acoustic guitar work, and some banjo stylings mixed in along with handclaps. you can't go wrong with that combination]

JAWBREAKER shirt (live) [this is an awesome song. to my knowledge, it was one of the last songs they wrote and recorded before breaking up in 1996 and appears on the reissue of their final album "dear you" i absolutely loved jawbreaker when i was in high school and made sure to spread their music to all of my friends. in my opinion they are still one of the most influential emo bands of all time; they came way before all that watered down "screamo" trash that ruined the genre. they are one of the most influential bands of my life for that matter. i also used to write a column about them in every issue of my old paper zine as well. i got a chance to briefly meet JB singer/guitarist blake schwarzenbach about 11 years ago when i saw jets to brazil play. i never got as into them though but at least it was something. BS is also a southpaw and played a mean lefthanded les paul. i def wish they had done more than just 4 albums as a band, but what they did release was true and powerful and i guess thats all i can ask for in a great band]

EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY day six [this is my favorite EITS song. this comes from their EP "the rescue" which they recorded themselves over the course of eight days, this song having occured on day six. go here to read more about the ep and to download all of the tracks for free, i highly recommend this intimate listen to them. this ep struck me because its very different from a lot of their EPICALLY LOUD output but still retains a lot of their hallmarks in a more subtle setting. this particular song is significant to me because when i hear i think about dancing...and of a love i lost too soon to the cruel hands of fate and drug abuse. she loved explosions in the sky and i took her to see them for her 28th and final birthday. barely a month after that show, she was gone. to this day i always think of her every time time i hear this song. i like to think of her smiling down at me from heaven, listening to the same song]

THE AVENGERS american in me [read above about the band. i love the simple and driving riffs in this song]

LED ZEPPELIN out of the tiles [i was a snotty punk kid for a long time and in fact one of my band's covered "i hate led zeppelin" by screeching weasel. now that i'm older i can admit the error of my ways and honestly say that, while i'm not a mega fan of them or anything, but i really do enjoy listening to them]

Q AND NOT U beautiful beats [this is from their final record "power" and i admit it, i had a serious addiction to this record circa 2006. the whole record just packs a smooth and clean punch and just makes me want to pogo around. i particularly enjoy the bass work throughout the record, though what really stands out for me in this track is the guitar and thumping drums. i never got much into their other work, and its a shame they didn't explore the direction on this album more, but this record still ranks among my favorites of all time]

-guaging my ears is always weird. when i went from 4 to 2 to hurt like hell. when i went from 2 to 0 it hurt even worse and was a major pain. but i just went to 00 and it didn't hurt at all and it was easy as pie. not that i'm complaining, its just odd.
-the new HOOSversion2011 stickers have been designed and just sent in to the printing press. expect to see them in early august. woot woot!
-i just read a story about a woman and her kids who beat 2 kittens with a baseball bat and it made me cry. wtf is wrong with people? (1 of the kittens died and the other is clinging to life. my purry prayers are going out to him)
-effing dykes recently posted a good entry on gay pride=consumerism which i thought was really good. that's part of the reason why i have never attended pride events, all the corporate bs involved. also large outdoor gatherings aren't really my thing. i prefer low keyness.

speaking of animal cruelty...here is a conundrum that's been in my brain for the past few days....
this father's day my family and i were planning on going to our favorite diner but upon arriving saw a crowd starting to gather nearby. my dad didn't want my nephew to be around whatever was going down so we left for another place. later i found out that people were gathering to protest an appearance at a local sports memorabelia store by the infamous michael vick. at first i was angry and wanted to join in but then i got to thinking and a lot of questions raised in my mind without clear answers. has mr. vick paid his debt? afterall he did go to prison. does the fact that he participated in such a brutal crime against animals mean he is scum forever or can he redeem himself? the protesters were exercising their first amendment right to be there, but doesn't the same apply for michael vick? doesn't he have a right to go where he wants to? and what of me, a meat eater (and i'm willing to bet most of people in the protest eat meat too) aren't i participating in animal cruelty (i'm trying to stop but with the issues i've had with my health this year, i need to focus on that first and vegetartianism later though i do feel guilty about it for sure). here is an interesting view on the situation by alec baldwin where he makes the point that pretty much any animal not raised as a pet is subject to cruelty and certain death. that being said, are we who eat meat any better than a person who killed dogs for sport or are we the same? its such a tough call and i don't know the right answer. i really don't. i guess its something everyone has to decide on their own. and for the record, i'm still no fan of michael vick or his actions but the situation really got me thinking.

-the smashing pumpkins first album "gish" came out 20 years ago last week. that means it was 17 years ago that "siamese dream" came out which was my first intro to their music. and boy do those facts make me feel old!
-black moth super rainbow is reissuing "dandelion gum" with 14 "extra flavor" songs which were recorded during the same timeframe. def excited for some fresh material by them. they're also going on tour in the fall so hopefully that means new material is coming too.
-i started my new class this week, american history after 1865 its pretty interesting so far. i'm already suuuper excited for the paper i have to write for the end of the class (aka not excited at all!)

-joss whedon on the end of Buffy season 8. speaking of season 8, the final trade paperback of the season is coming out on 6/14 which will complete my collection. it was def a shocking end to things and i'm really wondering what their going to do in season 9 to continue this.

SMASHING PUMPKINS drown [i've never been a huge SP fan but they do have a few songs that i really like, this being one of them. and since i already mentioned them in this post, i figured this song would be perfect to include. i really love the guitar and bass work at the beginning of this song, its almost elegant in its quality. and the drumming is top notch. perhaps more than the guitars, i love the line "no matter where you are, i can still hear you when you dream" i can apply this to a few people i've known in my lifetime. this is not actually on any of their albums, but was recorded during the above mentioned "gish" sessions. this is simply SP at their finest]

-steve and i are going to be taking a road trip to florida to visit madame cokes aka the ruling monarch of cokesylvania (think transylvania, not pennsylvania). we're aiming for september but could potentially go as early as july. not sure yet, but rest assured that there will be plenty of pictures, mayhem, and sticker action to be had whenever it is that we go.

the anjelah johnson show was super awesomely funny! we had great seats too and were right up front. even better, we got a chance to meet her very briefly and get our picture taken with her! my mom even made her laugh, go mom! take a look....

i think this is a great pic of us, and i'm glad me and my mom, aka the people who aren't professional smilers, turned out looking awesome as well! it was a great time and i can't wait til my mom and i can have a night out like that again.

HOLY FUCK-the pulse [this is probably my favorite HF song and i like a lot of their songs. i am a huge lover of instrumental music and especially am drawn to bands that break the melancholy guitar rock mode. what i love about this song and this band in general is their sound is blipped out, super key/effects heavy, with driving basslines, but that its all done by hand. as in there are no laptops in the mix, at least there weren't when i saw them 4 years ago. this is what makes them brilliant and stand out in a sea of other bands. they have a traditional drum and bass rythem section and the bips, bops, bleeps, and noises are all made by mini keyboards and guitar effect pedals that are manipulated by hand. i loved them before i saw them live but upon seeing that, it was made eternal]

CATHERINE WHEEL-balloon [from the album "ferment" which is a great record. i heard them when i was 13 or 14 but never paid them much mind. then about 2 years ago i read about them on a blog and decided to give them another listen 15 years after the fact. i was definately sad i hadn't gotten into them earlier and the shoegaze in general. def some amazing bands i missed out on]

LAURA VEIRS-tom skookum road [i really like her music, but this slow instrumental bluegrassy song is a little too twangy for my liking. i'm not a fan of fiddle in general and banjo has to be just right or i can't relate to it]

UNREST-picnic at hanging rock [this song is a mid-tempo hard and noisy rocker. its not a bad song, but like unrest better when they are poppy and jangly. nice to hear them play an instrumental though.]

SNEAKER PIMPS-low five [SPs kind of lost their magic after orginal vocalist kelli dayton left the group. however, this is a standout track. it comes from the album "splinter" and is at once trippy but rocking at the same time. good shit]

VASELINES-day i was a horse [this is a quick and jumpy number about being a horse. haha. good shit]

BECK-weighted down [a blipped out skip spence cover featuring members of wilco, feist, and jamie lidell]

SUMMERCAMP-play it by ear [i like to play this song at work cuz it makes me smile. it was also featured in an episode of buffy during season 5 as was the band themselves]

REPLIKANTS-organ transplant [this is a noisy trainwrecky kind of song. i say "song" loosely cuz its mostly just electro noises and a super aicd-fuzzy low guitar for 3plus minutes]

TIMBALAND-apologize [one of those mainstream guilty pleasures of mine!]

TOTAL SHUTDOWN-2 [this is on the complilation "if the 21st century didn't exist, it would be necessary to invent it" which is probably one of the best names ever. its not a bad comp either. this song leaves a little to be desired though as i'm not a big fan of avant noise overall]

MATT SHARP-let me pass [he used to play bass in weezer back before they royally sucked. i liked him in weezer but i can't say i'm a huge fan of his solo work. its mainly that i can't get into his voice i think. this isn't that bad for an occasional listen, but it wouldn't be my first choice]

the above are pretty self explanatory. haha. both shows were fantastic (except the one opening act for sebadoh, some whiny dude with a piano, i don't even know what his name was, but he was awful) and i'd def go see any of the above artists again. the kaki king show was freaking awesome cuz i was right up front by the stage so i got to see all of the intricate stuff she does while she plays (not that i could ever hope to imitate it!) and also got to chat with her for a minute after the show which was cool (and during the show when she and i were jokingly going back and forth about me having my cell phone on and it sending feedback to her monitor on stage). abandoned lighthouse opened for her and was really friggen good. he had download cards for sale and i snatched one up since i can't be bothered with cd's anymore (so snooty of me!). it was onlt $5 and def worth it. the sebadoh pics are all of lou and jason playing bass cuz i didn't really get any good ones of either of them playing guitar. i was on the bass side of the stage so thats what i got. i was def a great show, but i wish that they had played songs from "bubble and scrape" (they did actually play one, "forced love" which i really like). oh well. perhaps they will tour again and do that album...or maybe even work on new material! that would def be awesome. anyhoo, it was good to see some bands play cuz these days i def don't do it enough. ill have to work on rectifying that for sure.

while i was away a tragedy happened in my town. i picked up the newspaper and was shocked to learn that the barber who cuts steve's hair had been beaten to death in his shop by an unknown assailant a few days earlier. and it happened in broad daylight. wtf. WTF. he was a nice elderly man who had been there for years, who the hell would want to hurt him? they think that it was a robbery gone terribly wrong. whatever the reason, it just makes me sick. no one has been apprehended as of yet, but i hope whoever did this will be brought to justice swiftly.

and as an aside...idk if i feel like my safety has been compromised. i can open my front door and walk to the shop faster than i could drive there and find a parking spot. and this is the second major, violent crime to happen in my tiny burg in the last year (the bank was robbed at gunpoint. this was also a short walk from my house). i know there are people who live places where shit like this happens all the time, but its disconcerting in such a small place where violent crime is very rare and where the most criminal activity is a drug bust and the police issue more traffic tickets than arrest warrants. i know it has perked some mild hysteria in town, but steve and i haven't changed our normal routine. i just hate shit like this, from all sides.

TRISTEZA- a traves de los ojos de nuestras hijas (i'm still working on a translation for this title...this song represents a lot of what i love about this band and why i love instrumental music in general, as well as the potential they have to explore other territory with their sound. its a bouncy number, more uptempo than is usual for them, and which features light electro beats, vibraphone, and horns in addition to their normal instrumentation. its also less melancholy than their usual fare which was refreshing. i also love the ending as everything else fades away and we're left with an airy, echoey ending more typical of their sound which was fitting. all in all its a stand out track on an already pretty amazing record, "paisajes" which is def among my favorites of their output so far. now i just need to see them live. their website doesn't list any tour dates....hopefully that will change soon though)

-i got my elbow tattooed (again) the other day. how did it feel? it was UNBEARABLY PAINFUL!!!! (no really, its one of the most painful tattoos i've ever gotten..not just yesterday, but my elbows in general) but fortunately it was brief (it was about 7minutes in duration. better than the almost 2 hours it took to get the original work done) cuz it was just some simple lining added to make it pop out a little. thank god both of my elbow's are done now. shit huuuuuurts!

-i had the chance to see the warhol and cars exhibit at the montclair art museum a few days ago. the work focused on warhol's fascination with cars at certain points in his career. it was pretty interesting and a good collection of pieces was on display including some pretty early drawings which i especially enjoyed. they dated from his days as an art student and his early commercial work. i always like to see the early works of iconic artists because it shows where they came from. i would still like to see more in terems of a larger body of his work, but this was a good taste for now. i'm reading a biography on him right now and it was nice to have a visual frame of reference other than just the reproduced prints in the book.

-i'm still waiting to obtain the forthcoming wild flag 7" that will be available on 4/16 (hey they're putting it out as a bday present to me!) in stores...they had it at shows, but i wasn't able to catch them when they were in nyc earlier this month. buuuut i was forunate enough to get ahold of some live tracks by them which i have been rocking. def excited to hear what they sound like polished up in the studio and next time they're around these parts, i need to prioritize getting to the show.

-a new dollhouse epitaphs one shot written by jed whedon and maurissa tancharoen is now available. i gotta get my ass to the comic shop to pick this up.
-kaki king AAANNNNDD sebadoh next week!!!! both shows are my early 30th bday gift to myself. shit son!

earth hour was this past weekend and i think thats just great. i think its good to conserve electricity and for people to be aware. but what i really want to know is why the hell doesn't this happen daily? why just once a year? how hard it is to turn off non-essential lighting? not hard at all it just takes a little bit of training and self discipline. just ask steve what its like living in my house, i bitch at him every time he leaves a room and keeps the light on. he was the worst when we first moved in together, he left all the lights on all the time, but he's gotten a lot better. i'm really good at keeping the lights off when i'm awake and up and about but my biggest fault is that i tend to fall asleep when i'm reading. i always get really mad at myself when i wake up and the light has been on the whole time, but i'm really trying to put the book down and turn off the light as soon as i feel myself dozing off. but the plus of working overnight and sleeping during the day is that most of the time i can read by daylight before i go to sleep. i know that its not always feasable for major cities to just turn off the lights all the time, but individuals in their homes can do it and make a difference.

so i say, lets have earth hour every day, all year long. its so easy and takes next to no effort. in addition, keeping things like your dvd player, video game systems, microwaves, computers, chargers, etc unplugged when you aren't using them take zero effort and it all adds up in the long run to reducing energy consumption. are you with hoos on this super easy shit? if a lot of people make a lot of small steps, thats pretty big shit if you ask me.

RAHIM-enduring love (i haven't listened to rahim in a while but something today made me think of them. i always loved this song, the whole structure of the song just gets to me, and i seem to find myself having a hard time describing it. probably because at the time that i was listening to them the most, it was a very emotional time in my life and thats what i connect most with rather than with the instrumentation [but i must say the vocals are stellar and the drums/percussion really make this song for me on a musical level]. the idea of enduring love was a fleeting concept to me then, and it still is now in a way, almost 5 years after frist hearing this song. i got a chance to see them play some time ago and it was a really good show. i'm not sure what they're up to these days and their website seems to not exist anymore...and their myspace page was unclear... but hopefully they're still around and will make more tunes. we shall see]

playing with my new polaroid 300 (steve snapped this shot of my legs at the thrift store the other day) i'm happy to have a useable polaroid back in my life. the image quality is much better and crisper than the old 600 camera i had and while these seem to develop faster than the old ones, i've noticed that it takes a full 30-45 min to really get the full depth of the image (for instance, i thought this was too over-exposed when it was first done "cooking" then looked at it a little while later under the same type of lighting and it had developed further with richer darks, more shadow tones, and truer color) i def like this camera but i do have a complaint in that this version of the film is not as easy to hand manipulate. at least not the stuff that i would do to them anyway, its still possible to manipulate them, but i just have to figure out some new techniques to get the effects i liked. we shall see what happens!

and fyi the fuji instax camera which i had tried a few years back is the exact same thing, the exact same film, just a different brand name slapped on it. i'm not sure if polaroid makes a larger version of this camera, but i know that fuji does. maybe i'll check it out.

-i'm an ass. i bought a new hoodie the other day and wore it for the first time the next day. i then proceeded to spill shit on it which did not wash out. way to go hoosatron! i think i'm just going to make the most of it and splatter it with paint. that works.
-men are the "new" group of jd samson of le tigre. i say "new" cuz they've actually been around since 2007, but didn't release a full length until january of this year. i just finally snagged it and its some really good shit. they're currently on tour but unfortunately will not be out my way which sucks. i saw le tigre a few times (including their first tour when jd was not in the band but was their projectionist) over the years and def enjoyed them. anyway, back to men! haha. the record is rad shit and made me wanna shake my hoosy ass. haha. fav standout tracks "credit card babies,""simultaneously" (love the guitar work in this) "boom boom boom," "make it reverse" (love the breakdown), and "be like this" (also with great guitar work) i just wish i could play this at work but prob NOT a good idea. haha. electro shit like this is what makes me happy to be alive! and go here for an older ny times blip about women and facial hair, which mentions jd's amazing stasche. reclaim that shit! and right here for a page that has a few videos of men/jd and links to other shit.

as i mentioned last week or so, i've been reppin hard in the hoos sticker factory churning out a new supply for summer (its such a pain in the ass to work with enamel when its humid so i paint a lot in the cooler months). i still need to set aside a little time to design some fancy vinyl ones i can pay someone else to print for me, but i will never stop cranking out the custom ones on random stickers i find. i love the paint fumes too much! haha. (actually i hate the light headedness but it kinda goes with the territory)

-finally got a new laptop! its uber fast (4gbs of ram) and i can scan my finger print to log into shit. newavo techno yo! i have a lot of shit to transfer over still, but all 91gbs of my music is transferred which is prob some of the most important shit to be moved. and now that i have a cd drive that will actually read cd's i can start going through the boxes and boxes of shit i have in my basement and still at my parent's house. i went through a box last night and found some shit that is either way out of print, too obscure to find online, or shit from years back that i haven't listened to in ages. i can't wait to get that shit ripped!
-ol hoosy is going back overnight at work for the next few months. i'm happy about this because i feel like it will give me more time to focus on school in the morning after i get home from work with less distraction. i also can't wait til it gets just a tad warmer so i can start spending time outside; i always liked doing that first thing in the morning after work. i'm within walking distance of a rad river/park that i didn't spend enough time at last spring/summer and that needs to be fixed and it will be.

DAVID BOWIE-rebel rebel ("not sure if you're a boy or a girl" haha. the story of my life. my old boss used to say "there's your line!" whenever it would come on the radio at work. i love that line, but what i love most about this song is the guitar. its simple and driving and just gets inside of me like fish hook. i like a lot of complex, deeper music, but i also like a lot of things that are just straightforward and easy too. those things are what get me hyper and moving like a spazz, especially when i'm at work. songs like that may not get inside my soul the way something more down tempo and moody would, but they still make a lasting latent impressions on me hours after the fact of listening to it and thats all i can ask for in a great song. this song def falls in that category )

-i went to my brother's house yesterday to watch the a-team with him, but we ended up watching more sarah silverman than anything else. its been a while since i've watched her stuff and god i laughed so much. i friggen love her! it all came about cuz she somehow came up in conversation and i asked my brother if he'd seen the blackface episode of her show which he had not. seriously one of my fav episodes ever. so fucking funny and so fucking wrong! hahaha. i then i found out he hadn't seen "jesus is magic" either. WTF?!?!?! but we fixed that shit in a hurry!
-so...all the flooding in my town over the past few days was fun. the river across the street from my house ran way over its banks which resulted in my road being shut down for over a day, lots of businesses closing down, and a few of my neighbors houses getting really fucked up. we were lucky cuz though we got a total of about 10" of water in my basement (which has all been pumped out as of today) and our heat being knocked out (which is still not back on), not much of our shit was ruined, its not so cold out that its super terrible not having heat for a few days, and we never lost power. it could be way worse as some of the surrounding areas/towns were hit really hard. and then there's japan. i don't even have any problems compared to what happened there. i feel really bad and wish there was more i could do. as more info becomes available, i'm going to look to donate money since i can't donate my time by going there (though a part of me wants to but the whole no passport thing and can't take time off of work thing...2 big bummers. i am gonna get my passport soon though esp if i'm gonna actually be going to canada this summer)

-i have officially found sushi within walking/biking distance of my house which is friggen awesome as heck! its a new place about a mile down the road which steve and i spotted it last week much to our excitement. we had dinner there last night and def plan on going back but next time on foot or by bike. i can walk to pretty much everything in this town but never sushi until now. amazing!

(a few years back i emailed him cuz i lost some tracks in the shuffle between 2 or 3 computers that i had DL'd from him of the teenbeat records 20th anniversary show. he was nice enough to write me back right away and send me the files....or maybe he reposted them....but in any case, i got the tracks back which was awesome of him. the live version of flin flon's "black bear" that came from that show is fucking awesome and so much better than the original studio recording. i only ever saw FF once and that shit blew my mind...but its been so long that i don't remember if they played this song)

LITTLE RED CAR WRECK- rip up the carpet (this song appeared on one of my favorite comps of all time, yo yo projector:another studio compilation which came out in 1999. pat maley who was the man behind yo yo records/yo yo a go go was in LRCW as well. there is just something so cute and so innocent and so fucking pure about this song. the super simple and ultra clean guitar, the bangy drums, the little keyboard, the super cute vocals. the lyrics (see below). just so perfect. i have the album they put out "motor like a mother" and its good, but not as good as this one single song. and even better, japanther does an awesome cover/reboot of this track retitled as "public square" on their 2003 album, "dump the body in the rikki lake" their version includes the original guitar parts and keys with added distorted guitar and drums as well as their own vocals. brilliant shit. i wish i could push a button and a rope would instantly tie around my ankles and i would be hung up from the highest window in the highest skyscraper in the world. 25 million miles above the sky 25 million miles above the solar system 25 million miles above my house and i would rip up the carpet.

at the time of this shuffalump's scientific conduction, my ipod had 19,214 songs on it, but it has since grown to 19,331....actually more since i have some fresh aquisitions to add on. this is also is the shortest of the lumps yet, but its all good. i am throwing together a kickass all instrumental lump for volume 11 since i've been thinking/talking about doing themed ones for a bit and here we go. i am working on it as i type this actually and its safe to say boards of canada will be making an appearance on the 11th edition! i might change up the format a little too since there is a lot i want to cover...we'll see. okay sucka mc's, read on! comment to me, email me, tell me what you think. and as i mentioned last post, the invite to be a guest shuffalumper is still open as long as you meet the criteria (email me or check the last lump). alright...here we go!

BEIRUT-postcards from italy (oh what a good rainy day song! i admittedly never got super into them, though i really should revisit that, but i remember hearing this song for the first time in 2006 and just fell in love with it right away. i also remember being sure to include it on a mix cd in hopes of impressing a girl...i don't think it worked...prob not considering nothing much happened. oh well she turned out to be pretty lame anyway. haha. but yeah, i still get a certain sparkle in my heart when i hear this song. its just beautiful)
MARITIME- souvenirs (another band that in my mind is forever attached to 2006 as well but late fall, early winterish. and because of another girl, this one who would have much further and far reaching implications on my life, but we won't get into that here. haha. she was also far too...idk...something...to appreciate a lot of the music i like and deemed 90% of it weird and/or annoying. haha. we agreed mostly on rock and downtempo electro stuff and i kept stuff like this to myself... though its far from being "weird" or "annoying," she still never seemed to get it. the album that spoke most to me was not the one that this song is on "glass floor" which sounded too polished to me, but their 2nd album "we, the vehicles" i must have listened to that record a million and a half times...there was just something so vulnerable about it. not unlike how i was feeling at that time in my life)
7 SECONDS-99 red balloons (a snotty cover of the classic 80s track by nena. they don't stray far from the formula of a punk rock cover but that doesn't bother me. does it bother you?)
FC KAHUNA- machine says yes (this is from the album of the same name. its a good slab despite their name being on the pretty stupid side. haha. yes i did just say that! but yeah, i have said it many times how much i have a weakness for electro music and i like how they go back and forth from upbeat stuff that makes me hyper to slower stuff that just gets me zoned out and trapped in my own head. they did a bunch of eps and singles as well as a mix cd-which i have used while DJing- but to my knowledge this is the only full album they ever did)
FUGAZI- shaken all over (this is a very short segue track from the "instrument" soundtrack which i absolutely adore. i have it on vinyl and i used to play that record sooooo much over and over flipping it from side to side again and again (though i always was partial to side b). i have it on my ipod now obviously and i still just love how stripped and raw it is. i've said it before that i love fugazi more than almost any other band ever and more than that, i have so much respect for them for always staying true to what they set out to do in the first place. this is an amazing record and a look at the true greatness that fugazi. i need to break out the LP again, theres something far more magical than hearing it on my ipod. i should also watch the movie since its been some time since i've seen it)
GORILLAZ- double bass (all of which makes me anxious, at times unbearably so. when i first moved back to nj in december 2001 and then into early 2002, i pretty much played this record all the time. and not because of "clint eastwood" but because of the strength of the other tracks that weren't getting played on the radio, this almost entirely instrumental track being one of them)
LADY GAGA-so happy i could die (say what you want, but hoosy likes gaga! hahaha. i love when something like this pops up in a shuffalump-britney spears made an appearance on one of the earliest volumes. anyway, is there anyone else who gets a real underlying vibe of sadness in this? cuz i do)
LINDA SMITH-its now (about 10 years ago i came into possession of a delightful gem of a comp called typical girls that was filled with some pretty kickass, mostly obscure, and lofi shit by mostly female artists. i have listened to it many times over the years and still get a lot out of it. i don't know all that much about many of the artists on it because there isn't a lot out there about many of them. i'm just hoping the above link to ms.smith is accurate. the typical girls link has a list of tons of pre-riot grrrl female post punk musicians which could keep me very busy for a while. i can also hook you peeps up with this comp cuz its so worth having . you know if you're an uber music dork like me. haha. just hit me up)

-supersized:strange tales from a fast food culture is a new graphic novel by morgan spurlock (with jeremy barlow, lukas ketner, tony millionaire, and ron chan) about fast food culture. this looks interesting, i prob am gonna pick it up.
-c86 and all that: the 25th anniversary why the C86 cassette compilation has a far more important legacy in independent music than just giving rise to jangly indie-pop
-i cut my finger at work today and it was annoying. the end. haha.
-egg city radio is a wacky mp3 blog that i've loosely followed for a while. it rose out of the ashes of post punk junk which was just a brilliant thing and i was very sad to see its demise. luckiyl ECR popped up not long after. the new blog focuses less on post punk music as an aesthetic and mostly has some pretty weird obscure shit on it (the last post was of porno 8tracks from the 70s) which i can't say i like as much as i like PPJ as i found out about some rad osbcuro new wave/punk/post punk stuff on there that had more value to me than some crazy porno mp3s (though i'm not gonna lie, i've DLd some of these before cuz they're so fucking funny). not to say everything he posts is like that, but yeah, anyway, check this shiz!
-monster movie music a blog about monster movies and their music. its got some good pics too. i should steal some. haha. and it is also regularly updated which is a plus. i hate when i find new blogs about nifty things and the creators are less than thorough about keeping up with them.
-explosions in the sky has a new song called "trembling hands" available for DL now. its from their upcoming record, "take care, take care, take care" which comes out in april. the song is short for them, clocking in at a mere three and a half minutes. it was also a departure from their usual quiet-loud-quiet-LOUD-quiet-REALLY LOUD format which to me is def enticing cuz it was honestly getting a little old (don't get me wrong, i love EITS, but i think they have a lot more to offer than some of the formulated sad/epic songs they've churned out in the past). there were also vocals, though not words, which was a change as well. it makes me wonder what the whole record will sound like...i'm def excited to hear it. they are playing in NYC on 4/6 and i looked into tickets but its not general admission and for where i'd be in the venue, its not worth the price (i think $52 after fees) to me. plus i'm going to see two other shows that week (kaki king on thurs and sebadoh on sat) so i'll be pretty rocked out. haha. perhaps next time they're on tour and if i can get decent tickets i'll go to the show.
-i've been working in the hoosy sticker factory again churning out custom hand painted (okay...stenciled) stickers to get ready for the warm weather. i like to get a lot painted this time of year to have ready for when it gets warm and i start to lurk around in urban areas. and before it gets too humid and then takes 17 hours for the paint to dry, that too. i also think i'm going to do a new design or maybe 2 styles to get professionally done on vinyl since i'm out of version 2.0 and have uber limited numbers of version 1.0 left. i say this because, though i'm not sure yet, but i'm thinking of doing some traveling this summer and leaning heavily towards going international (aka canada) you know as soon as i get that whole passport thing worked out...as in you know, getting one. for those who know me well, you know there is one thing i don't travel without and that would be stickers/adhesives of some kind. and if i'm going international, shit son, i'm going fucking large!

FUGAZI-epic problem (this is from their last album "the argument" and shit i can't believe its been almost 10 years since it came out. please fugazi, please come off of "indefinate hiatus" and make some new music. this record was major for me when it came out in late 2001 and for most of the next year. i've got an epic problem, this epic problem's not a problem for me. ahh i just love it. i was most dissapointed that they haven't recorded anything since as a band because this record really was starting to go off in a whole new direction as they matured. though all of the members have stayed active doing other things it still isn't the same. i've mostly kept up with ian mackaye's band the evens (love that shit!) and joe lally's solo work (to date he's released 2 solo records). every day i still wish they'd do another record. every day. you never know, it might happen!

and as a funny aside, as i've mentioned before, i'm the music master at work and don't shy away from playing shit just because the vast majority of the people there won't know who it is. i also like to have fun and do random trivia questions and give away sodas and candy to the winners. i do a lot of history questions but this morning it was all music action. in addition to my question about john williams (i absolutely love his work), i decided to do "name that tune" and played "arpeggiator" to keep it tricky for them to figure it out. i didn't think anyone would get it but then a little while later a shy girl who doesn't talk all that much came up to me and was like "was that 'arpeggiator'?" to which i got very excited and gave her a high five! haha. i tried that game with emilys sassy lime a few months back and not one person knew (not suprisingly). haha. though i did have one kid come tell me he really liked it so i burned it for him. shit, why did i never have a cool boss who burned me rips of obscure 7"s? oh was that just tooting my own horn? hahaha.

ooooh shit! i figure since it took me 80 years between volumes 7 and 8, i better get right on top of volume 9 and here it is in all its glory. as i'm typing this, i am jamming on some uber catchy electroclash which is like crack for me...once i hear it, i can't get enough. haha. anyway the official song count on my ipod is 19,154 and counting.

as the lump gets older and more mature, i've been really thinking about trying some new things. i am looking into having guest shuffalumpers (again not sure if i'm going to go soley with their commentary or add my own...we'll see how it goes). i've talked to a few people already and if you're interested please let me know. i also think i wanna do some lumps that i make up myself. haha. fake shuffalumps. or maybe i dig through my 7" records and talk about them....or put all of the songs i've ripped from my vinyl collection in one playlist and shuffle that. or about one specific artist or record label. you know, mix it up. idk. we shall see.

DRUMS AND TUBA- the horse and the tree (i saw D&T a few years back at a tiny hole in the wall place in brooklyn to a crowd that was smaller than the crowds the band i was in at the time was playing for which struck me as odd cuz i figured the place would be mobbed. there was also an incident of public lewdness that night but we don't need to worry about that. haha. anyway, i love their earliest stuff best when they were purely instrumental, but i must say the drummer also being the vocalist is pretty rad. i was in a short lived project in which i was the drummer/vocalist but thankfully it didn't go far because i'm a terrible singer! hahaha. we did record a song in a real studio though oddly enough [as a favor to a recording student]...and i had to do a billion takes of the vocal tracks with the sorest throat ever....but i don't have a copy so don't ask to hear it!)
THE VANDALS- the rog (i must say this song is disspointing as is the album it comes from "fear of a punk planet". i always loved 1995s "live fast diarrhea" the best which i rocked on cassette all throughout high school. haha. all the rest of their stuff fell short of LFD to me. and i admit, i also wore plaid pants a lot of the time while i was rocking it. hahahahaha)
PEACHES-serpentine (oh motherfuckerrrr! i fucking LOVE peaches. 2 funny facts...i used to blast "the teaches of peaches" when i was in college the first time. you know the time i went for photography. haha. but yeah i would play it in the studio during shoots regardless of it made my studio partner uncomfortable or not...and just for the record the lab tech loved it and encouraged it! and 2nd fact, when i was first in my old band, to figure out if we could play together we learned a few covers and banged out a nastily bad version of "set it off" which looking back, was pretty fucking awesome(ly bad). there may be a bad recording of it somewhere but i don't have it and we never played it out when we started playing shows. to this day "teaches" remains my favorite of her albums, though i do love them all. this track comes from "i feel cream" and let me just say i fucking love any songs that include mullets and talk of women having beards and mustasches. hahahahaha. i just wish i could get away with playing this at work but i think its probably best i shy away from it. this shit rules)
CAMBER-temporary (this...THIS...was the most amazing thing to me at 18years old. i loved the record this is on "anyway, i've been there" and it was the real start of my somewhat major obsession with all things deep elm records that lasted the next 4 years. back then they were putting out some epic shit, shit that really mattered to me, and was not at all watered down or poppy. i miss those days. this record also was in heavy rotation after my split with my first gf. oooooooh what a sad little hoos i was! this record makes me nostalgic, but its also still pretty friggen good. there's that too. i still get all super excited like i used to when i would pop the cassette-yes cassette! into my crap ass first car and drive around all over nj/ny with this blaring. good times!)
KANYE WEST-late (oh kanye west. haha. its been a while since i've listened to him and i can't say i'm a huge fan, but i just transferred stuff from an older hard drive and this was some of it. this is snarky. i like it. haha)
RADIOHEAD-lucky [acoustic] (who reading this actually knew that radiohead has been around since 1985? though at that time they were known as on a friday and didn't change their name til several years later. google that shit son. this is a really raw acoustic version of the "OK computer" track as in just thom yorke and a 12string. the recording quality is not super great either but somehow that really makes it for me. i really enjoy the original and it makes me want to lay on my bed just fading into it...or perhaps out in the grass in a field somewhere. this marks one of a number of shuffalump appearance for radiohead)
IRIS intercede light (i heard them for the first time on my 29th birthday at balance hair salon in jc. i've never gotten my hair cut there but i have shown art there and gone to shows as well....and worn a shit costume with horns. hell yeah! this track comes from "wrath" which was definately a departure and features a lot more guitar and a harder feel rather than straight up electro. its not bad but i'm more a fan of their straight up bouncy electro shit i must say)
FREEZEPOP-strange (oh freezepop so cute. i had a severe problem with them a few years back as in i needed electopop rehab when i was done with them. my old band mates would beg me not to play this in the car when we were driving places even though they got me into FP in the first place! this is from their new record "imaginary friends" and while it is not a huge departure from their past work, its slightly more mature and less cutesy which is a nice change strange the way you're like a ghost to me....love that shit)
FANTASY MISSION FORCE-train surf (the bio for FMF on their myspace page is pretty detailed so check it out. anyway, this is one of the lesser known of the million side projects of rob crow of pinback. let me just state for those who don't know, i love pinback and rob crow. more than most things. FMF is pretty noisy and lofi which is pure brilliance in my book. they did a few things but they've been hard to track down...i'm not even sure where i got the tracks i do have. but i'll keep searching for more)
DICK DALE- del-tone rock (the king of the surf guitar! not only is he a guitar legend and the father of surf music, he is also a badass southpaw! he is still performing and puts on a great show...but be warned, you only have to go once because if you go twice, you will see the EXACT same thing right down to the stage banter.that being said, i'm really glad i got to see him [the first time!] and he gave me one of his guitar picks which i glued onto the pick guard of my trusty southpaw stratocaster)
EXCUSE 17- forever fired (this is carrie brownstein before she was in sleater kinney and incidentally, this is also my favorite excuse 17 song. go ipod for picking it out for me to enjoy! haha. its so interesting to listen to this now and to hear brownstein at the beginning of her musical career and all the potential that was apparent even then. i'm really excited for her new band wild flag which also features SK/quasi drummer janet weiss and mary timony of helium who i also love. i've saw SK a bunch of times over the years including their 3rd to last show, saw mary timony solo 4 or 5 times and saw quasi once. all of the shows were incredible so i can only imagine what all 3 of them together will sound like. now that i think of it, about 10 years ago i also saw carrie in a very tiny and short lived band she did in olympia,wa called the prowl. i'm not sure how many shows they did...i only remember that one which was above a record store at a sweet little venue that had some great shows before it got shut down. i have pictures somewhere but god only knows where. and though i had a tape recorder that night, i didn't tape their set which i've always secretly kicked myself over because they never recorded anything)
GAY AGAINST YOU- ppanda (shit you gotta love snotty, annoying electro/bitpop! this is the kind of stuff that when its on in my car and my mom is with me i know to skip immediately. haha. i myself even have limited patience for it and have to take it in limited doses so it doens't lose its magically dork appeal. haha. this is a noisy bouncy instrumental number and i want to jump around now that i've heard it. haha)

FLEETWOOD MAC-little lies (okay, okay...a little on the cheesy side, but still you gotta admit its a great song. this came out when i was a wee 6 years old-in 1987- and i rememeber hearing it a lot as a kid. i always liked the keys and foofy windchimes in it. haha. anyway, i was out with steve and mr. pineapple today and we stopped into the store and it was on, made me nostalgic, and i realized i didn't have it so i went home and DL'd it. i've been having a hard time lately with some things in my life and its been hard to reconcile with these things...i'm trying...but its slow going...but yeah...its a toss up if i want the cold hard truth or for someone to tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies. i just don't know which one would be better at this point)

and today....there are 2 runner up songs that really have been winding their way through the vortex of my mind and they are "vampire" by antsy pants and "i wanna be your dog" by the stooges. all 3 of these songs sound really different from each other aesthetically but they all speak to me in the same way which is why though stylistically they don't seem to relate, in my mind they absolutely do.

les savy fav- hold on to your genre (i never got super into LSF though i do have a number of their records thanks in part to an old gf. that being said, i love this song. i love it purely for the music and mainly because i do tend to be a sucker for driving basslines. the guitar work is rambly, echoey, and at times just as insistent as the bassline. the drums and vocals are nothing really special to me, the real win is in the strings. perfect driving music)

I COULD NOT HELP MYSELF!!!!! since i mentioned him earlier, i thought it fitting that i include this video. this song is FUCKING AMAZING. i love that his "singing" voice sounds exactly like he speaks. hahaha. and the lyrical quality is just faaaaantastic. haha. i used to sing this to my mom when i was a teenager in a fake voice.hahahahaha. in fact, i also just used this as an opportunity to text her "mutha, there is no otha" i know she appreciated it. hahaha.

and while i'm at it...i mentioned this last post...or the one before, idk, but recently. anyway, i mentioned that steve and i are watching the entire run of the a-team and we're keeping track of shit. we are indeed, we are conducting scientific research (with labcoats and everything! okay...not really) on certain data from the show...as in how many car flips and how many tires get shot out. and as of season 2, episode 8, how many times BA says "sucka" or "fool" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. we also got the suggestion from my brother that we keep track of how many cigars hannibal smokes but we haven't incorporated that in yet. we also thought of some other things (how many times they drug BA to get him to fly, how many bad disguises hannibal wears, how many times the same actor appears as a different character) but perhaps we'll look into that for future viewing. after all in the life of uber dorks, you really can't watch the entire run of the a-team just once now can you?

yo suckaz! welcome to the eighth installment of the trusty and mighty SHUFFALUMP!!!!!!! it's been a while cuz you know, holiday craziness, then adjusting my schedule from overnight to early, early morning (2am) and now just to early morning (4am). got all that? haha. and don't forget hoosy's college education. but yeah, i started this shit in january and very much neglected it, but i'm back at it now and am going to finish it up so i can get this lump on the road. shit son! the hoosatronic ipod of doom is now up to 19,152 songs. bow the fuck down!

LADYTRON-discotraxx (ooh ladytron! this is a bouncy lil number from their first album, "604." i do enjoy this track and the record as a whole, but for me their work has always been more about a few really strong individual tracks per record rather than big albums. i think i can really say that for a lot of the electropop/clash groups i enjoy. i had a chance to go see them on my 25th birthday but something else came up-i don't remember what now-but i wish i had seen them. i def want to see them...i should get on that)

SATAN STOMPING CATERPILLARS- aphid (SSC was a very early incarnation of one black moth super rainbow-who make their own appearance later in this list. this track and the ep it comes from, "flower slides" has a bit more of an organic feel to it, with more guitar work and the absense of heavy synths and vocoded vocals..or much vocals at all. but you can def see where they were headed and it all makes sense when put in perspective with BMSR's catalog and the solo work of front man tobacco. love this shit. really, i do)

MARIO-ft. gucci- break up (this is not something i normally would say i'd listen to but i have it because of work. i have a huge playlist of stuff i play at work and i give my crew the opportunity to add to it by giving me stuff and one guy gave me a flash drive with about 70 songs including r&b, old school funk, and some hip hop. a lot of it was pretty good and it was nice to get a sampling of something else other than rock and indie stuff that i usually get requests for and that i mostly listen to)

THE EVENS- until they're clear (my god do i love the evens. for those who don't know, this is ian mackaye's post fugazi project. and for those who don't know, i fucking LOVE fugazi a whole lot more than i love most bands on this earth. this song is short, low, and mysterious....nobody's here...and i feel all alone when i hear it. not saying that as a bad thing. just a thing. haha. this comes from their first record which is really good, though not as good as their second record which is really great. i'm not sure if they're going to be releasing any music, ian mackaye and amy farina had a baby in 2008 so i imagine that they've been pretty much busy with that. i sure hope they do though)

MIRAH- education (i went sleigh riding with mirah once...over a decade ago now...during the brief time that i lived in olympia, wa. interestingly enough i would see her around, went to her house once or twice, and would see her at her ladyfriend's house-who was roommates with my then lady friend-but i never really went to her shows. i saw her once before i met her and lived out west, and once in 2007 and that was it. its been years and i doubt she would remember me anyway. this comes from "(a)spera" which i must say is not my favorite record of hers. its a good slab, but i always loved her earliest work on random 7"s and comps as well as her first album "you think its like this but really its like this" which is a fucking adorable gem of a record. those songs were nothing short of magical. excuse me while i go listen to it on repeat now. haha)

JUNO-a listening ear (from "this is the way it goes and goes and goes" this record still has the ability to crush me under its emotional weight even a decade after first listening to it. i took the greyhound home when i came back from olympia all those years ago and it was an insane ride...cold...painful...stinky...long...snowy...lots of delays...but i had this cd with me and i listened to it over and over on that 3,500 mile trek. this track is not my favorite from the album, but its still good. i remember trying to hold back tears on the open road when-along the columbia river-it hit me that i was heading home with "the sea looked like lead" in my ears. i feel a million miles/hours or more have passed since that moment, but it still radiates)

BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW- run through or around the park (could it be? BMSR-technically-twice in one shuffalump?! though for you more astute readers this has already occured before, on volume 5 of the good ol shuffalumpy. i could continue to gush, or you fools can just get with it and DL them so you can understand their amazingness for yourself. this particular track makes me get a far away look in my eye and imagine the sun shining down on me in the middle of the forrest or perhaps close to the ocean...either really...but leaning more towards the ocean cuz i just love the ocean. yeah, its just that fucking good. they officially have "DL or die!" status)

KIMYA DAWSON-everything's alright (this is from "i'm sorry that sometimes i'm mean" which if you ask me, is one of the greatest album titles fucking ever! such a cute crushy song, i just heart it. i also heart any song that has silly video game noises in the background. cute guitar, cute lyrics, video game noises? yes please!)

SANTO AND JOHNNY-sleepwalk (i have long held the opinion that this is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written; its just that good and gets that deep under my skin. after hearing it at a very young age, i'm sure its a big part of the reason why i've had a lifelong love of instrumental music. i love good lyrics in a song, but a powerful instrumental tends to stick with me a lot longer and it all started here. their rendition of "summertime" is fucking amazing as is a lot of their stuff, but nothing ever captured the power of "sleepwalk")

AIR MIAMI-the event horizon (i just love anything mark robinson does, for real. this is one of their less hyper songs with a more laid back jangle to the cute and clean guitars coupled with slightly cheesy canned drum beats and a subtle bass line. bridget cross handles all the vocals on this track, and while i prefer the song's mark sings more, this song is still pretty awesome)

14 ICED BEARS-coming down (oh so cute! it'd been a while since i'd heard 14IB and this def made me smile a toothy, jangly pop style smile...and yes i can use jangle/jangly twice in one post! i love the echoey vocals and how the drums seem to threaten to overtake them at any moment. the line "reality is only temporary" just gets me every time. there is just something so magic and irreplaceable about fuzzy C86ish bands like 14IB-{tho they did not actually appear on the legendary C86 tape}. they and others like them went to a place that few new bands ever touch but maybe its better that way)

AT THE DRIVE IN-doorman's placebo (i was never a big fan of ATDI though i did later really love sparta and somewhat the mars volta which sprang from their ashes. i'm not sure if this track appeared on any of their albums, the version i have came from a 7" that was very poorly ripped. not to worry though cuz its not all that stellar of a song. definitely lacks the power of their later material and of my favorite ATDI song "one armed scissor" i'll skip this next time. haha)

KAKI KING-the footsteps die out forever (a relatively short beauty of a song incorporating lap steel which can go either way for me. fortunately on this track it goes in a good way for me and layered with her masterful guitar work, its a small slice of perfection. i'm super excited to see her next month, its gonna be an amazing night for sure)

kimya dawson- "velvet rabbit" (i was celebrating my 21st birthday in nyc with a friend and we went to see the butchies at the knitting factory which was a staple in my life back then. i still remember that night 9 years later and not because of the butchies, but because of the charming opening act which turned out was one ms. kimya dawson; i knew instantly i was watching someone special. she had 3 cdrs for sale of her albums and i snatched them all up...these were all re-released on various labels over the next few years. my favorite of the 3 was "my cute fiend sweet princess" from which this song comes from as well as one of my other favs of hers "chemistry". but it was the lyrics from this song, specifically "like the water i want to keep running," that really spoke to me; they rattled around inside my head for a very, very long time afterwards and to this day still strike a chord in me. i am also thoroughly in love with the cheesy drum machine beats in the background. a true lo-fi masterpiece thats been affecting me for nearly a decade)

hahahahahaha. i love this shit! felicia day and the entire cast of the guild is fantastic in this and i couldn't stop laughing. i especially love the dance scenes when they go into slow motion cuz my life is so like that! hahahaha. i have backup dancers with me at all times and we often break into song/slow-mo dance sequences with our hair blowing in the wind. i showed it to a friend the other night after he showed me the bollywood themed song/video they did "game on" which is equally fucking amazingly awesome. this song is also so so electropop and kind of sounds like freezepop which all ya'll bitches know hoosy is a softy for (freezepop and electropop in general). i just snagged the mp3 so i can be an uber dork and put it on in the car. hahahaha.

and i just noticed that maurissa tancharoen is one of the backup dancers in this. shit yeah! she's a screen writer and joss whedon's sister in law. she also acts and was in a few episodes of dollhouse as the active kilo.

-i've been kicking it 8th grade style lately and rocking some old school green day. shit son!
-weird al yankovic has a new children's book out, when i grow up. shit, if i had kids, i'd so read this to them! haha. as it is, i'm really thinking about picking it up for my nephew who is turning 6 in a few months.
-go here for a 2009 interview with beastellabeast. this band just recently came to my attention and i dig em. sadly, guitarist stella nova passed away last year so i'm not sure what is up with them now or what the other members are doing.
-steve is working overnight for the next 3 months and i'm going back to 4am's. at least both of us are on weird sleep cycles, but i tend to sleep more at night before work and he's sleeping in the morning right after he gets home.
-this is my last week of accounting. shit yeah! i don't understand half of what's going on, but i'm somehow managing to pull off an 89 average...hmm...

since i've managed to neglect the shuffalump for so long (the 8th installment still sits half typed...i swear i will post it. i swear!) here is a little mini-lump that just occured whilst driving with steve after getting sushi. oh and by the waaaaay, the official song count on my ipod is up to 19,104 and counting. i think maybe i'll start including 1 song per post too and some random thoughts on it. that sounds like fun, right? haha. anyway, read on kiddies (and no i didn't rig this, even though its one of those "too good to be true" mixes again)

the bravery- hatefuck (from "stir the blood" this is probably one of their fastest, most aggressive songs and certainly one of their angriest. the main reason i really like it, besides it being so angry, is because of the rabid, fuzzy bassline which is almost entirely chords and i'm a sucker for chords on bass. its dark lyrically and "there will be no tenderness," kills me every time. it also tends to remind me of a particularly self destructive, though thankfully very brief, relationship i had with someone i really, really didn't like but who just happened to be there-but don't get mad at me for being a nasty player, i served the same purpose for her. ugliness insued for a while, but fortunately its over and i haven't talked to/seen her in a very long time)
of montreal- forecast fascist future (when i was younger, i used to listen to them alllll the time, but have slowed a bit over the past few years. i still smile everytime i hear them though. this song is from "the sunlandic twins" which came out in in 2005 a few days before my 24th bday which i spend watching them play. i saw them a few other times over the years and they always put on a great show...i should dig up the pics i have and post them. anyway, this wasn't my favorite track from that record, "i was never young,"and "so begins our alabee" take the cake, however, i do enjoy the remix of it by iqu on "satanic twins")
waldorf you're my disco (am i not a huge sucker for electroclash? i am i am, and i never hesitate to play it heavily when i DJ. haha. anyway, i obtained this track by way of a comp called "this is electroclash" and its just a great driving song or, you know dancing song...provided you dance which i don't cuz i suck and also provided you're not stuck behind a 90 year old guy while driving. ugh. haha. but steve and i had a lively and lewd discussion on all the things you could do while playing your synth at the same time. haha. who knew?)
dj shadow- the number song (from "entroducing" and prob one of my least favorite tracks on that album. haha, sorry! not to say its a bad track, and the beats are downright awesome, but it lacks precisely what i like about DJ shadow, greater depth. i love his tracks that i can just fall right into and get lost in like "building steam with a grain of salt," "what does your soul look like?," and "fixed income" -which is from the album "private press" and prob my fav shadow track of all. idk, maybe i'm just too picky. haha.)

twin peaks turns 20 this year, and to celebrate a group of artists participated in a group show at clifton's cafeteria in LA (if it was in nyc my ass would have so been there) named in the trees. if you follow that link you can see the work, a lot of which is really good. the above piece is called "fire walk with me" (i have that phrase tattooed on my arm i love it so much) by the artist james hahn (i can't seem to find a link to this guy!) and was one of my favorites. david lynch himself contributed pieces and i was also pleasantly suprised to see work by ryan heshka, one of my favorite contemporary artists. i'm def bummed i could not see this in person, but glad i got a glimpse of the work online.

in terms of the show, i have been doing this recently with older shows that are off the air, as in watching the whole series in order over the course of weeks/months. i plan on rewatching the entire TP run again (and started with a friend about a month ago), but i'm in the middle of watching the entire run of the a team (yes bitches, the a- team! steve and i are watching it and i will have stats on that soon cuz i'm keeping track of shit!), and still need to finish off the final 3 seasons of the x files. and as always, i'm in the middle of watching the entire run of buffy (i start with episode 1 and watch it up to 144, then start over again so i'm always in the midst of it. i'm on season 5 right now, prob my fav season) and this time i'm watching it concurrent to angel so its taking longer. not to mention i've got work, school, and real life shit going on so...twin peaks, i will get to you, but just not right now!

-el ten eleven? yes please! i just got their newest album, "its still like a secret" that came out at the end of 2010. it is making me all happy, especially the fact that there is a song on it called "ian mackaye was right" (a little hoosy trivia, mr. mackaye and i have the same birthday, though he is 19 years older than me)
-steve and i were talking about europe and asia the other day, and how those are 2 of the most creative band names EVER. then we decided that we're going to form a band and call ourselves north america...or indian subcontinent...we're still trying to decide. any thoughts? i'm kind of leaning towards i.s.c. myself.
-i got a letter in the mail. i made some fancy list at school...like the honor roll or dean's list or something, but they called it something different. oooooo! then they sent me some email that said i can pay them money to get special privilages for being on this list. it always comes back to cash money doesn't it? idk. i guess i'll think about it. maybe there is something more to it to consider.

i love this! i lifted it from aquarium drunkard, a music blog that is hosting sebadoh's 2/25 show in la. i'm super excited cuz my rotation at work is changing so that means i will be off the weekend they are in nyc and that i can gooooo!!!! i just nabbed my tickets, shit yeah!!!! the only poopy part is that quasi will not be on the east coast leg of the tour, but i'll find a way to go on somehow. haha. i'm going to bring my lil pocket camera so i'll be able to get some shots. i can't wait for this shit! i'm bringing in the start of my 30th year with lots of dorkitude and musical goodness. oh and another poopy thing...its not that big of a deal...again...i will find a way to go on...haha...but they're doing only songs from "bakesale" (1994) and "harmacy" (1996)-both great albums...but my favorite album by them is "bubble and scrape" which came out in 1993 and to this day is just pure magic (or at least all the songs that lou barlow and jason lowenstein wrote. i can go either way with eric gaffney's songs). oh well, maybe i'll get lucky and they'll throw in a song or 2...maybe i can email them and beg them a lot? hahaha.

-the cd drive on my laptop has a spotty performance record at best....kind of annoying considering i just brought a couple of fresh boxes of cd's home from my parent's basement to rip....i guess this is another check in the "i need a new laptop" column. guess i better start being a good kid and transferring the 88gigs of music i have to my external hard drive...actually prob half of it is on there so...it won't be that bad. but then there's the rest of my shit too. ugh. so annoying! haha.

-5 myths about being in a band as told by mogwai. their new album, "hardcore will never die but you will" came out on valentine's day. i've been listening to it pretty much all week and its really fucking good. i love "mexican grand prix," (with the rare addition of vocals, though vocoded ones) as well as "death rays", "san pedro," and "rano pano" but there really isn't a bad song in the bunch. i need to try to get out to see these cats again while they're on tour cuz their live set is killer. (and once i get my act together with the shuffalump posts again, i think i'm going to do an exclusively instrumental one to showcase my fav instrumental artists)

-oooh i just found out that i have another baby cousin on the way and he/she will arrive in august! hell yeah to super cute baby cousins! and if all goes well with work and such (as in i'm off that "day"), i will get to see my 2 other baby cousins in april. they both live far away (one in alaska and the other in upstate ny), so its not often we all get together and always great when we do. yaaay!!!

-go here for an interview with jason lowenstein and right here for an interview with lou barlow of sebadoh. i really like LB's songs the most...but when i think about it, there are quite a few JL ones that are real gems....hmm...or maybe it's just that i like his voice better since his is higher and more melodic than LB's is. idk. haha. and if you check out their website, they have a lot of free live mp3s ranging from shows in 1991 all the way to 2005.
-the white stripes are finished. hmm. i like them but never became a huge fan....though i am a sucker for, and always have been, 2 piece bands (having myself been in a 2 piece many many years ago).
-the shuffling of music has diluted its cultural impact. this was interesting and i agreed with some of it, i approach music from the same side that author john roderick seems to. i remember a time before being able to have almost endless access to pretty much anything i wanted, no matter how random . i remember having to hunt and dig for things at a small network of record stores i frequented in nj, ny, and pa. i remember looking up the good stores in places i was traveling to so i could hit them up too; now i can't remember the last time i was in a record store. i remember having my own little musical world that a lot of other people weren't a part of. i remember all of that, and i still have some of it, but its somehow different at the same time. the mystery is gone to so much and what is really obscure anymore? and not just with music but with pretty much anything. i've said it for years...the internet is great, but it truly has taken the fun out of being a dork/collector nerd. is it a good thing or a bad thing? i haven't figured that out yet.
-i just bought a yoda alarm clock. bitches, you read that correctly, i said a fucking yoda fucking alarm fucking clock!!!!! wake up or wake up not, there is no snooze! (actually, snoozing is crucial to my waking up routine. i get very disoriented when i first wake up and need about a half hour to be able to literally get up and walk straight. haha. so i snooze off the cobwebs and am ready to go by time i actually need to be up)
-have i mentioned unwed sailor on this shit before? i can't remember. but they are worth mentioning because they are a pretty awesome instrumental band and all you kids should know that ol hoosy loves the tunes without words! they are rocky, but tend to lean away from the melancholy which is a good thing since it seems like so many bands of the instrumental nature are all sad and mopey. haha. they have their moments but its all good. their songs are also on the shorter side which makes them more accessable. i love long songs, but i pretty much have to be in the right mood most of the time to deal with anything past the 8minute mark. haha. anyway, check these cats out, fools!
-typing on a laptop with a messed up "e" key is a pain in the ass, but i'm getting more used to it. i will eventually get a new laptop, but this one still has some life in it so i'm holding out. i also don't want to deal with the daunting task of moving all those files around just yet. haha.

-i gots me hairs cut today. i'm going to try to get it cut more often so it doesn't get all long and shaggy...or really in my case, past the 1 inch mark which means i have to spike it. that extra 2 minutes in the bathroom in the morning is such a drag!

so.... i mentioned 32 Jones in my last post...and i have some more news...in that i have done a lot of thinking and reflection on it and have decided to resign my position as curator. it wasn't an easy choice to make as i've been involved with the gallery going on 3 years, but with my work schedule (you try going to work at 2am and maintaining a "normal" life!), going to school full time, and some stuff i have going on in my life...it just doesn't fit. the gallery needs and deserves someone who can be hands on and completely focused on the mission statement- which is to provide a space for emerging and LGBT artists- and it just isn't me at this point. if things change at some point, i would definitely continue to volunteer or perhaps venture out to curate a different space, but right now, my education and figuring out some tangles in my personal life have to be my number one priorities.

this all being said, i'm still going to make art and show what i can of course, but i will probably not do as many shows as i have over the past few years and if i do, i'll prob not be as visible at the openings unfortunately. we shall see.

you know, it just occurred to me the horrible mistake i made by not naming my one cat azrael, you know, like as in gargamel's nasty kitty sidekick.hahahaha. instead i named her fergusen...but she's a tiny badass (some people don't believe she's full grown)...always scheming and plotting with her head sticking out of the little hole she somehow carved out of the blinds in the living room window...has one fang (i found her like that so i'm not sure how it got broken off)...extremely bad breath (hahaha worst cat breath i've ever smelled! if she wasn't obnoxious i'd brush her teeth like the vet suggested but she can be a little tough to handle)...and an attitude to match it. hahahaha. plus she wears a court jestery collar at all times (she likes it and has never tried to wriggle out of it). no really, look...

but i decided to semi right this wrong and change her name to a. fergusen hoos...the "a" of course secretly referring to azrael. hahaha.

i am not a crazy cat lady....i swear...i only sometimes blog about my cats. hahahahaha.

i just finished accounting 1 yesterday (yay!) and today i started accounting 2 (ugh!). after staying up late to finish my final paper last night and going to work on barely 3 hours of sleep to unload a rather large truck (bigger than most we've been taking at work lately. low carton count=good and less stress for hoos!) at 1:30 in the morning...oh that and and being in charge of people too... i decided i will take this one day off from homework so i can be bloggy. haha. i did my silly introduction that was due today and that's it, but tomorrow i'm at it full force....yay...ugh...i mean...yaaaay! and btw, that paper was the biggest load i've ever concocted! haha. -a few days ago i went on a little DLing kick of 60s girl groups...i admit it, i have a weakness...haha. i was playing some of it at work the other day and one of my music buddies shares my love and was really excited about it (a lot of the kids who work for me are real into music and we talk shop/bands all the time. its fun) i snagged the shangri-las (omg i fucking LOVE them! they are like betty white to me...as in you dis them in front of me and i punch you in the face!), the supremes, martha and the vandellas, and the marvelettes. i grew up listening to a lot of motown/motown-esque stuff cuz that's what my mom was into when she was young. at around age 10 or so, i found my mom's old 45s in our basment and i'd come home to do my homework while listening to those records on my fisher-price record player pretty much every day (as an aside i got really into 50s music the following year but i had to rely on cassettes since my mom was too little in the prime of great 50s music to be aware of it and had no records from that time) it was good times and i still have those records, though i really should go through them and sleeve/bag them cuz i never have.

above pic is a scene from the 1938 BBC adaptation of rossum's universal robots, the 1920 play written by karel capek. and for those who don't know, this play brings us the first mention of the word "robot," which has its roots in the czech word "robota" (meaning "serf labor"). i had a chance to see this play last month and it was pretty good, and i'd def like to see it again to catch more of the texture since i don't tend do well with theaters (live or movie kinds) since i get fidgety and/or sleepy. after seeing it, i realized that the themes in this play were also heavily borrowed by dollhouse which i was unaware of until seeing the play. the show even takes and uses the name rossum, used for the evil company responsible for all the badness in both the play and the show. knowing this now, i still like the show, and think it's a good modern twist on the story and expands upon it by seeking to explore things in a greater context. though interestingly, all of the literature/interviews i've read about the show, not one mention of RUR is made by the cast, crew, or the creator man himself, joss whedon, but the similarities are too great for it to simply be a coincidence (hello rossum!) there may be some mention of it out there somewhere, but i have yet to see it. and its too bad the show got cancelled because i feel (and i'm not alone in this) that there were a lot more themes and relationships left to explore, and a lot more story to be told. sigh. isn't that always the way?
maybe us fandorks will get lucky and they'll make a movie...perhaps.

-cover lay down folk covers of familiar songs. reimagined versions of folk songs. because in the folk tradition, music belongs to the community. again i say...hmm....interesting.
-the mountain goats have a new record soon, all eternals deck. i will prob pick it up, as i really loved the mountain goats and still support him and try to check out the newer releases...and yes, i did say "loved" as in past tense and i did refer to "them" as "him." reason for that being that i will always love and find extreme magic and inspiration in his earliest work, when it was just him, a guitar, and an extremely shitty tape recorder in a random room somewhere making an astounding number of simple, beautiful songs. before the backing band and the major label deal, before all of that stuff, that is what i love. i have all of those old releases and i really need to get them together and rip them. right now all i have on my ipod is a carefully hand selected mix i made for a friend years ago, but it contains some real gems, including some really rare bootleg material that i recorded in the summer of 2000 that i never really shared with anyone. i can remember hours spent listening to him in my early 20s, once i listened to the entirety of "sweden" and just cried the whole way through. or the time he performed "the best ever death metal band in denton" at a small club in nyc during the fall of 2002 and getting the chills as he sang "hail satan" in the chorus. if you ask me, the record that that song is on, "all hail west texas," was the last really amazing record he released. sigh...i feel nostalgic now. haha.
-god i love EFFING DYKES so much! the latest edition is on dykes and how we looove to wear plaid. i fucking laughed so much reading this. i love that shit like a fat kid loves cake. the blog and wearing plaid for that matter.
-i used to be a big hockey nerd, and actually, a part of me still is even though i haven't played in a few years (which makes me sad). i just came across an interview with arguably one of the biggest names ever in women's hockey, hayley wickenheiser. interestingly enough, it was not about hockey, but about books vs ebooks. i have dabbled a little bit in ebooks, but like her, i tend to like the "real deal" more. check it out here.

shit fools, i decided to google my name, cuz i'm a little bored and its always fun to do that anyway. turns out that one edward hoos was the 26th mayor of jersey city from 1897-1901! i'd have to look into it to see if there is any relation....i'm actually a little hazey on the origins of my branch of the hoos tree because i don't know all that much about my great-grandfather, emil jacob hoos, other than some of the wackier and less than savory things he did (he built a castle as his house and embezzled money among other things, no lie. we actually refer to him as "the embezzler" on my mom's side of the family. haha). my great grandmother, anna becker hoos, came to this country from germany in 1910, but when she met great gramps and when he got to this country...or if he was born here....not so sure on that. maybe i need to sign up for one of those family tree websites! haha.

oh and yeah, virgina fucking tech uses the name hoos too (which is what the above pic is about) but i'm not sure on how they might pronounce it (btw, my name is not pronounced HOOZ, or HOUSE, its HOOS with an S and soft emphasis on the OO sound yo) but since its short for "wahoos" i think the inflection is probably different (more like HOOZ with a hard emphasis on the OO sound, kinda like WHO'S). but eww, a football team copped my name?!? cuz clearly they ripped me off, duh! haha anyway, read the wiki entry here on those name stealing jocks! hahaha. maybe i'll get on of their shirts! hahahahahahaha.

-beth ditto from the gossip has written a memoir, coal to diamonds, which will be out at some point in the (near?) future. i knew her back in the day when we both lived in olympia, wa. back then i saw the gossip play in lots of tiny dingy clubs, in basements and living rooms, and i bummed at her house for a few weeks too in the fall of 2001 when i was in between places and trying to decide if i wanted to come back to nj or not (i came back, duh). i also worked with their first drummer for a few months too. anyway, i haven't seen miss beth since 06 and she's like super famous now, so i doubt i'll be seeing her any time soon either but i'll prob check the book out when its released. i also should dig out my old photos of them cuz i have tons starting from their very first tour in 2000 with sleater-kinney all the way up to 06, the last time i saw them.
-steve has an annoying habit of making stupid impulse purchases of crap we don't need just because its on clearance. but he did well this time and picked up some pretty snazzy light up ipod speakers for a mean buck 25. i initially griped at him for bringing more useless shit into the house and thought that they would suck given that they were random offbrand ones (and lighting up is pretty cheesy) but i must say i was pleasantly surprised and they aren't half bad. i was rocking out doing the dishes the other day and was excited when buddy holly came up on shuffle and the lights started blinking. haha.
-i just got a polaroid 300 camera! i'm so excited cuz i've missed doing hand manipulated polaroid work since i've had trouble getting my hands on the discontinued 600 film. the shots are considerably smaller than the classic 600 size, but i'm sure i can work shit out despite that.

-i just got 2 new pairs of vans but apparently missed the memo that they now have yo yo gabba styles available. shiiiit!!!!!

-i dropped a book on my laptop and broke the E key off....the glue job i did didn't really work...and it's really annoying. it still works, but i have to press really hard and its throwing off everything i type and making me type so much slower which is uber frustrating. not going to be very fun when i have to write papers for school. ugh. idk, i was already thinking about getting a new laptop so maybe i'll just get it sooner rather than later. i took a look at a few stores the other day and found 2 that i liked so we shall see. if i do get a new one, i'll probably keep the old one just for music so i can take it to DJ gigs and keep my other shit separate. idk. we shall see!

-been listening to a lot of sebadoh the past week. heart them forrrreeeeeeeever and they are going on tour next month on the west coast with quasi which is awesome. not that i'm going to be going out there to see any of their shows, but they will be announcing east coast dates soon which def has me excited. i'm def planning on trying to get out to see them. shit!

-the buffy season 8 motion comic just came out on dvd and i picked it up but i must say i was dissapointed in it. mostly it was due to me being a snob and not liking the voice actors who all had nothing to do with the tv show. i'm a big fan and love the original cast so i really missed the play between them, even though its been years since theyve been together. it really didn't feel like i was watching buffy at all without them and that was a drag. the lack of good special features didn't help either. and i can say i wasn't really a fan of the motion comic style in general. it moved too slow and didn't seem to have a flow i could get into. give me live action, or a cartoon if i'm going to take the time to watch something. otherwise i can just read the comic books and get pretty much the same effect.

-omg...OMG!!! i just discovered i can watch modern marvels on netflix!!! i felt bad for abandoning the history channel when i got rid of my cable, but now we can be together again!
-i'd never watched psych before, but given the fact that they recently did an homage episode to twin peaks, i decided to give it a whirl. the show wasn't something i would probably watch again, but i thought the tribute and the lynchy references were great. they also got 7 orginal cast members (including the log lady!) to guest star on the show which was also a nice touch, my favorite performance coming from sherilyn fenn. you can stream this from multiple places online and its a must if you are a twin peaks fan.
-i just DL'd the emusic exclusive ep "here is happiness" by pink noise. def some good shit. i need to find their first record cuz i def want to hear more. go here for an emusic profile on them.
-the fucking A-TEAM comes out tomorrow! i am not a fan of going to the movies so i haven't seen it yet but i'm def excited to. i may just get this on dvd too (fuck buying shit anymore, again i mention netflix in this post!) cuz i loved the show as a kid, was OBSESSED with it in high school, and currently own all 5 seasons on dvd (my brother, steve, and i still have yet to pull off a marathon, but we're going to)

chinese food...

yes, i am devoting a whole section of this post to chinese food, this being because i discovered the best chinese place ever is in fact right down the street from my house. there is another chinese place down the street from my house that i've been going to forever, ting's, but one day recently i was hardcore craving chinese at 10 in the morning (i work overnight, what do you want from me!). i waited until an acceptable time and ventured to ting's only to discover that they were closed. very annoyed, i decided to check out the "other place" located in the little dirt strip mall; i've seen it a million times but i had never gone there due in large part to my long standing relationship with ting's. but oh was it fate cuz that was some of the best damn lo mein and egg drop soup i've ever had! so what if the atmosphere of the place is run down and "shabby not so chic," and if the staff there can't quite pinpoint if i'm a guy or a girl and the one guy grunts while he talks to you. bitch, the general tso's chicken is just that good (shit wasn't i trying to be good and not eat meat anymore? oops). the only odd thing...it may be the some of the best chinese ever, but they don't give you fortune cookies. i've gone back a few times since (steve loves it too!) and they have yet to give me any crunchy fake psychicy goodness at the end of my meal. i suppose i can overlook that, given the rest of the total package being so good, but i just found it...weird. i've come to expect...we've all come to expect...that little folded cookie treat. like pavlovian dogs, we wait for those tiny slips of paper nestled inside those golden and crispy bits of heaven. have you ever experienced that? no fortune cookie with your chinese food? discuss. (and as an aside, it's kind of a little ironic cuz fortune cookies aren't chinese at all. no really, it's true. read up here)

-i worked like 9 days in a row or some crazy shit like that and just got a day off yesterday. what did i do? SLEPT!!!!! i did school work and had a mini buffy marathon (rewatching season 5, prob one of my favs), but the 14 hours of continuous sleep was just so amazing. that's like 3 days of sleep for me normally. haha.
-its always funny when you find out later, after someone has screwed you over a lot and treated you like shit, yeah its funny to find out they're walking around with a hair-do closely resembling a fucking mullet. i mean i guess it's their choice to have horrible hair but you never know, maybe they think its a good style? idk. haha
-i've been being a complete dweeb at work lately and wearing a different colored knit hats every night to have fun with my team. they are always guessing what color i'll do next (last night i did green) and on thanksgiving i wore a hot pink hat...all night...and had several serious conversations with various people. what can i say, i fucking rock that shit! (i have to pull out the baby pink on i have too....hmmm....)
-i finally snagged the new home video record, "the automatic process," though do to my LOVELY 70 hours at work last week, i haven't really gotten to listen to it all that much...interestingly enough, the first track on the record is called "accomplished but dead" haha. their last record, 2006's "no certain night or morning" is part of what got me through the first few months of working overnight when i started it 4 years ago.
-oooh tristeza has new stuff out today! "paisajes" was just released and now i need to get my mits on it so i can report back. soon my friends, soon!
-go here to stream a new song by david lynch (yes, THAT david lynch). i wasn't sure what to expect, but it's actually a really good chunk of semi mellow electro pop with pretty heavily vocoded vocals and is right up my ally! i'm def interested in what else mr. lynch will come up with musically. man, now i wanna stay up all day and watch twin peaks. haha.
-i've cracked 17,000 song on my ipod. oooh! i have to find where i wrote down the last mini-lump i did so i can post that....if not, i need to just do a fresh one...which i should really do any way. so stay tuned suckaz!

-i've worked so much the past 2 weeks. i'm tired. and sore. and don't know when my next day off is. but i'll deal. haha. i think i have next tuesday off actually...maybe. ooooh boy!

-check out pitchfork's staff 2010 gift guide. i want the ion tape express tape-to-mp3 converter! it sure beats the "rigging my old 4-track and old pre-amp/usb converter to my old computer" gig i have to work with now. its more trouble than its worth which is probably why i haven't bothered with it in so long. i have the ion mp3 turntable which is really easy to use and gives a pretty decent end result, though prob not according to an audiophile, but good thing i'm not one. haha.
-today i decided to be extravagent so i bought something super fancy for myself. that being a hot pair of new sweats to sleep in. damn am i living laaaaaaarge!!!!
-new post at effing dykes. i love that shit!
-so it's official, they're remaking buffy, or "rebooting" it, without joss whedon. not suprising warner bros wants to cash in on an already popular franchise and the vampire craze, but i mean, come on, the buffyverse and joss whedon himself have like fucking cult status! you can't mess with shit like that! it's not clear from what i've read if any of the original cast will be involved, and if its just a remake of the movie, pretty much none of the characters from the show were in that anyway so...idk. i have mixed thoughts about this. as a fan i want to be like "fuck no, i don't want to see it if joss isn't involved!" but on the other hand, what if they come up with something really great? iiiiiidddddkkk! haha. but for me, the cast on the tv show and how they evolved with those characters is really what made me love buffy in the first place. we shall see!
-you all know i heart instrumental music. i'm listening to unwed sailor right now and really digging it. give it a listen fools!

-mini lump and or a new shuffalump coming very soon. my ipod is up to 16,972 songs. i have a kid at work that is always like "my god, you know SO much music" he's so cute, he was trying to talk to me about it and was like "yeah, i love creed and three days grace, do you like them?" and i was like "ummmm...." hahaha. but i didn't want to crush him so i was like "yeah you know, some stuff is...okay" hahahahahahahahahahahaha. fuck creed. seriously. that singer guy is a douche and a pompous windbag.
-due to circumstances beyond our control, the show we had planned at 32Jones for december has been postponed until february. it sucks, but its the best choice for all involved and we will be able to present a much better show in the new year. stay tuned for details of course.

-billy corgan disses pavement ...again....here. i've never been into pavement, but seriously, billy corgan is an idiot and needs to come off this. its been more than 15 years, who gives a shit? and besides SP aren't actually that good, so he has no business saying who "has the love" and who doesn't. or calling anyone a sellout for that matter after he himself recorded a song with jessica simpson. um...excuse me? can she even name one SP song or in reality, spell their name correctly? hahahaha.
-new from girl talk is the album "all day" it's free to DL from the link, and they provide several more links you can nab it from if their servers are overwhelmed, which they have been pretty much all week. i never got that into GT, i mean, its fun and all, but it seemed a little gimmicky to me. i heard the entirety of the new album last night and there was a lot on there that i was like "oh shit! really?!" to, and my friend who had it was really into it, but still my reactions were more out of nostalgia and fun rather than a serious nod. i did like the fact that he used shit from fugazi and the toadies (i wonder how many people listening to it caught those samples and knew who it was), i mean, who the hell uses that shit in making modern beats? haha. i also liked the ramones/missy elliott parts, not two sounds i'd ever expect to hear together. i suppose this would be fun to have for a party situation, but like i said before, i do have trouble taking this seriously. i guess that is a little douchy of me, but i'd really like to see what mr. gregg gillis could come up with on his own, sans really well known music/vocals used as samples. go here for an interview with him in spin.
-it's week two of school! i'm pretty much done with the majority of my work, i just have to do the outline for the paper i have to turn in at the end of the class. not too bad. i was just posting on our discussion forum and was amused to read one student's post about using correct grammar and punctuation...who then proceeded to butcher the whole point of the matter by using sentence fragments and a slew of incorrect commas. hahahaha. way to nail that shit home! and i know i don't write all proper and shit on this blog, but when it comes to formal writing, i have that shit on lock yo. i edited my mom's master's thesis, shit! and you should see my work emails...they are the stuffiest things EVER, all prim and proper. hahaha. my mom did want me to be an english teacher, but i think if i were, i would either spend my nights crying or eventually i'd just go postal over the way people butcher the english language. haha.
-slumming at other people's houses and doing laundry while they're on vacation totally rules!

-so...i just got asked to try out to play bass for a band...and i thought about it pretty hard. a part of me really wanted to do it, a part of me almost did...then i realized i just can't make that kind of commitment to an established band that has already toured and released an album. it sucked because there are two things that i miss so much that it almost hurts and one of them is being in a band (and the other is playing hockey) but i know it was the best decision cuz with my work schedule and school i just can't do something major right now. that and i'm not so great at playing bass. haha. i can wing it, and with enough distortion can make it shit that sounds pretty badass and loud, but in the end...i'm still not that good. hahaha. still, this whole thing got me thinking and i do want to start something from the ground up, something more low key that can work within my schedule, and something where i won't have to dissapoint anyone else with my work/sleeping restrictions. whether that means something with one or two other people or if that means trying my hand at some electro shit....i want to make something happen. (as luck would have it, i discussed music with a friend the other night and he's working on a project that he may need a drummer for. he described exactly the scenario i'm looking for. i've jammed with him in the past and heard his solo stuff; its def something i'd be interested in. we'll see how it shapes up)
-work has been totally kicking my ass this week. i'm sore. boo!

so DJshadow was pretty awesome the other night. i couldn't really get any pictures, so i stole this from his website. haha. the lighting wasn't right and i didn't feel like fighting to get up to the front. the shadowsphere (pictured above from behind) was pretty ridiculous as well. there were projections on/behind it throughout the show, my favs being the death star and the exploding justin beiber head. hahahahahahahaha. there were sports themed shots too, of the sphere being a bowling ball rolling down an alley and a baseball being knocked out of the park which was cool. they also had projections of him live from little cameras inside the sphere intersplaced with other images which was fucking awesome, but later in the show he did turn the sphere around so the crowd could see him in action face to face. not that i was close enough to really see much, but it was still cool to see him crafting shit right there on the spot. all in all, it was a good show, and i really love his music and respect the talent he has, but i really probably wouldn't go see him again. its not the same experience of seeing a band play and i just love that so much as a fan. the energy to me just didn't feel the same, because after all, it was canned beats even if he was mixing live, and that will never have the same appeal to me as a live band. at one point, i went to just listen at the bar and didn't watch the performance at all. but maybe if he played something really small where i could be up close and actually watching him work in detail...that i would probably go back for. he's working on a new album which is supposed to come out sometime next year which i'm def excited about. details on that as i grab them of course.

-i tear up my work clothes pretty often, especially my pants. but not to fear, i totally just scored 4 new pairs of pants on clearance for $5 each! i guess i can retire the other pair i've been sporting lately that are barely 4 months old but are already in shambles. maybe one of these days i'll start hemming my work pants...we shall see!

-i am really amazed at some of the stuff that people in my class are posting on our discussion forums. um...like do they realize this is COLLEGE and not a blog or facebook? oh and that we're being GRADED on what we post (it accounts for 40% of our grade in fact) and our subsequent responses to our classmates? i was shocked to see most of the postings in the weekly discussions include shorthand, colloquialisms, and incomplete sentences. someone even wrote "lol" i was like are you fucking kidding me? i would never even dream of doing something like that on a college level assignment but i guess that's just me being prim and proper. haha. oh and then there's my favorite, the awesome lady WHO WRITES EVERYTHING IN ALL CAPS AND RUNON SENTENCES THAT GO ON FOREVER WITH RANDOM INCORRECTLY USED COMMAS AND LOTS OF MISPELLED WORDS THAT ARE SPELLED WRONG IN HER LIFE (no really, that is the way this chick writes and phrases things. hahahaha)
-i went shoe shopping with jenny the other day...and she came to realize just how absurdly particular i am about pretty much everything! after hunting and searching, and me rejecting every pair of women's shoes she tried to pick for me, i found a passable pair of little boys shoes. hahaha
